Ladies, gentlemen, and music lovers. Could you help me welcome SLOW WALK to our blog? Slow Walk, a London-based artist, has produced a captivating masterpiece with his debut album, “The Mountain.” Slow Walk, a ten-song album which was released on August 8. Join me and let’s discuss these songs
The title track of this record is “Mountain Dreamer”. The song opens with these dark orchestral-like synth sounds, and within it, you can hear wind chime sounds. The song talks about feeling stuck in our thoughts or being at a crossroads in life which is very normal but, in this song, the character actually begins to move, to redirect his life back on track, and encourages us to do the same. Musically, the vocal performance is beautiful and the instrumentation really brings you into that mind space of climbing a mountain. This fantastic song opens the album
The second song on the record is called “From the town below”. The song opens with a buzzing sound and a dark and dramatic synth sound. The song tells a compelling story about a man who saw a mountain he liked so, he moved to the town below the mountain. From where he was, he could see the mountain day and night. He wished desperately to climb the mountain but he didn’t have the courage to. He even helped other people to climb the mountain and comforted himself that, he would join them when he was ready. The story ends with him seriously considering taking that bold step. I believe the moral lesson of this story is that, sometimes we need to take a step and conquer our fears to live life to the fullest and do what we love, even if it scares us. Musically, the vocal performance suited the vibe of the song and the instrumentation and pace of the song complemented the storytelling perfectly.
“So why mountains?” is the third song on the album. This song is upbeat and exciting right from the start. In the song, the persona tries to explain why he is fascinated with mountain climbing. The song mentions that the mountains in some of our lives are metaphorical and that is very true, but, to this persona, he believes that his mountain is not metaphorical but an actual mountain which he wants to climb. It isn’t something on his bucket list he wants to tick off but, a quest he wants to go on and take a well-deserved break, to relax. The song was very upbeat and foot-tapping and I enjoyed the groove and rhythm of it and so will you
Next up is “high chance”. The song doesn’t waste any time getting into the performance. This song encourages you to take risks in life. Because if you don’t try?, how will you know?. We get another stellar and praiseworthy vocal and instrumental performance.
“Don’t carry that weight” is the next song on the album. This song opens with a very unique melody, which is unlike anything I have ever heard. The song can be looked at in two ways. The first is metaphorical. It states that, in this life, which is represented as a mountain, we should never carry the weight of problems, stress, or the problems of others. Carrying the weight of the world on shoulders is very wrong and can have disastrous effects. Even Atlas, who was a god, got tired after weighing the world on his shoulders, how much we?, who are just mere humans. The song can also be looked at as literal, where people who climb these high mountains are encouraged to bring very little stuff, so that, it does not weigh them down during the climb. However you choose to look at this song, you can agree that, it is a cautionary song The vocal performance was outstanding. The instrumentation was very different and was a breath of fresh air
Up next is the song called “Younger Legs”. The song opens with a throbbing synth pop melody. The song is about an individual who put something off for so long that, he becomes too old to do it and, he thinks about why he didn’t do it. The vocal performance was so great and overall, this song brought the good vibes
“Nature doesn’t care” is up next on the album. When the song starts, you are met with these very captivating and very exciting sounds. We meet a character who talks about his nature. According to him his nature is to question everybody else or be angry at the world and he can’t do anything about it. The song is mid-tempo and very enjoyable
Up next is the track “PONR”. The song opens with quite an exciting beat that evolves into an exciting melody. There is a bridge in a forest reserve in the heart of Ghana. Crossing this bridge is very scary, it shakes and looks weak. However, when you get to a point on the bridge, you are given two options, take a nearby bridge back and down, or move forward, a few steps forward is the point of no return, you have no other choice but to continue the walk to the end so, nobody gets injured. This is just an example of a point of no return because, it can present itself in so many ways and, it seems that the character in the song had gotten to that point. It also has a dark and dramatic aura and it is quite titillating
Next up is “the pinnacle”. The song opens with a dark synth sound. In this song, the character is trying to teach us how to climb a mountain. But, this advice can be applied in various ways as well, it is trying to tell us to put one foot in front of the other or one hand on the rock and not look down. He reveals to us why he is not afraid to climb the mountain and it is brilliant. He imagines that the mountain is a building with many floors, so he’s just moving from floor to floor. Musically, we get yet another incredible vocal performance with amazing instrumentation that adds to the thrill and excitement
The last song on the album is titled “Sum It All Up”. The intro of the song makes good use of the synth sound to create a pleasant intro. In this song, our character who was very doubtful in
“From the town below” has finally conquered his fear and climbed the mountain. He talks about how he feels in that moment and lets us know that he will no longer be called a mountain dreamer who helped people to climb because, he, has climbed the mountain against all odds. Musically, the vibe of the song feels hopeful and jubilant and it was marvelous. It is so amazing to see the development of the character from mountain dreamer to mountain conqueror!
This album demonstrates the artist’s range as a musician by being produced entirely by himself. Slow Walk immerses listeners in his music by drawing inspiration from classic concept albums like Jeff Wayne’s “War Of The Worlds” and The Who’s “Tommy,” as well as his love of cinematic storytelling. I enjoyed the cohesive storytelling and character development and I was amazed by it! I cannot wait to hear more music from him
