By looking into Alimba’s musical development from recording himself on the radio at a young age to the construction of electronic environments through architecture, the name Alimba, which is synonymous with Greek producer Spiros Aliprantis, reflects a history of dedication, transformation, and unquenchable thirst for creativity. Each new stage in Alimba’s musical career seems like an introduction to something yet to come. The new ten-track album, “Resonance”, is an adventurous attempt at exploring the territory of avant-garde music through fearless experimentation that transcends known frontiers. This album is unique in the way that it combines technical skills with the artist’s innate talent, delivering sounds so unique and intense that they cannot be replaced. It is a perfect example of an independent record that not only satisfies but also leaves the listener longing for more of Alimba’s work.
“Dream State” is the opening song of the album and immediately immerses the listener in an atmospheric soundscape that appears to be a thumping and pulsating, dreamlike awakening rather than a traditional song. The music begins with a shimmering high-frequency pad that gradually grows larger and is accompanied by light, repetitive beats that imitate the rhythm of REM sleep. Even though it’s an instrumental, I feel like the song is an exploration of the mind’s sanctuary, a place where all our experiences from life’s far and near are processed without being limited by reason. In the middle of the song, the song becomes ethereal, then switches up the tempo and the beat, making listeners get two songs in one From the musical point of view, the song uses spacious reverb along with the “breathing” synth filter, thus creating an atmosphere of enormousness. This song opened the album wonderfully
Taking a different approach, “Kalispera” kicks off with a vibrant, staccato-like melody that seems to capture the initial flicker of the neon lights. It’s a lively introduction to the night inspired by the Greek background of Alimba and filtered through contemporary eyes. The motif centers on the transformation from ordinary to extraordinary, specifically on that exact point in time when anything is possible with the coming night. As far as musical qualities go, this track is characterized by a sharp, analog-like drum beat, probably due to the DrumBrute, and a lead synth sound that is at once familiar and clear. Like the previous song, this song also changes its tempo for a bit then returns to the original tempo. Vocals make an appearance too, though not in a dominant role but rather as melodic echoes.
“Need speed” begins with a fast-paced, high-energy hi-hat beat to instantly create a feeling of tension. The essence of this theme can be described by pure motion, the intrinsic desire to push limits and overcome any resistance. The sound elements used in Need for Speed are clean and precise, including an energetic bass-line and a sharp melody created at a high pace. In terms of vocals, the rhythmically filtered synthesizers become the voice of the song and give the feeling of engine sounds shifting gears
“Evolution” begins with a dark synth sound that gradually adds depth to itself in a manner that is organic in nature. The concept conveyed by this track is development and improvement in the course of time. As far as music goes, “Evolution” is an epitome of layering. At first, Alimba plays an almost primitive melody that gradually transforms into an elaborate and multi-layered composition. The instrumentation is rather gentle and cozy because of a gradual onset of sounds performed by the synthesizers. The impression made by the composition is one of awe regarding the evolution of a simple theme.
In “Senses”, we start off with a spooky, empty ring that resonates into a vast, echoing landscape. The concept of Senses revolves around the heightened sensitivity to your environment, when each strand of hair on your arms tenses upon the ringing of sound. There is so much physicality in the musicality, characterized by high-quality transients against bass-heavy, subby soundscapes. This piece also has an eerie vocal track that resembles a chorus of voices, but it is actually just an ethereal hum from a highly modulated synth pad.
The song “Dark legion” makes an entrance into a realm of aggression with a powerful and distorted drone and clattering sounds. Power in terms of unity and the strength of the shadow-self is the theme. It features a thick instrumentation of the “wall of sound” variety, with strong sawtooth waves and relentless beats. Musically, the effect is meant to be slightly dissonant in order to bring out tension and inner power. In effect, this is a powerful track, a warrior song that makes you feel protected from outer influences with a wall of sound.
“Sea Waves” refreshes the energy of the record through its opening sequence, which begins with soothing oscillations of white noise resembling the movements of the tides. This song represents the therapeutic process of nature in which what goes out will always return. On a musical level, the song features an expansive and watery arrangement, featuring a “washy” reverb and a delayed lead sound reminiscent of sunshine on water. The instrumentals used here are minimal, using primarily chords rather than rhythmic tracks that feature slow attacks.
The “Zero G” sound begins with a rising frequency that creates the illusion of the music floating above you to the ceiling. The message conveyed through the track is the sense of weightless freedom in creativity. In addition, the use of metallic FM synthesis gives rise to crystalline melodies. The melodies are danced over a light rhythmic beat. The instrumentals are heavily weighted on the top end of the frequency spectrum with little activity in the lower register to convey weightless music.
“Sculptor (Extended Version)”
opens with a rhythmic “tink,” which could be interpreted as an angel soaring through the sky. The idea is the precise and tangible process of art-making, which involves forming an everlasting piece of art from nothingness. Since Sculptor is an extended instrumental, its music concentrates more on the hypnotizing building up of tempo, where each successive rhythm feels like an exacting “sculpture.” The composition is crisp and crystal-clear, with the mid part bringing everything down to one simple pulsation that eventually builds into a huge melodic climax.
This album ends with the song “Triangulum (Trance Mix).” The song features a classic and energetic 4/4 kick drum pattern followed by a melodic and anthemic lead that builds gradually from the beginning of the song. The underlying idea in this track is that of resonance or a universal connection between everything that exists, both physically and spiritually. Musicality includes an extremely energetic and high peak time, with rich harmonic structures and a soaring vocal melody line that serves to create a sense of closure. The instrumentation is dense and expensive-sounding, covering all frequencies.
The career path taken by Alimba is a clear example of how creative fixation can shape the career paths of people, beginning from childhood when they would record radio shows for entertainment purposes until it finally resulted in a musical landscape that is as immersive as it gets. The musician continues to reinvent himself through various explorations which have seen him traverse different continents and music genres, each time coming back with a more experienced yet new perspective on music making. This latest album release is an indicator that Alimba’s creative metamorphosis is not yet complete. The music is an exhilarating plunge into the realm of the avant-garde, a series of experimental sounds that seem to come straight from the future. Not often does one find an album that dares to challenge convention yet manages to connect on such an emotional level, but Alimba proves himself to be adept at walking this fine line. The human spirit is not dead in this piece, the soul of an artist who chooses to forge his own path shining through the machinery. There was something incredibly magnetic about the production, the dedication that went into creating each track. This album is irreplaceable, something that I couldn’t trade away even if I tried, a testament to what can happen when a great musician stops settling. Alimba’s sound is distinctly unique to him, and it seems there is no end to what he can do with it.
