Formed in 2026, American collective OpCritical was not formed to bask in the limelight but rather to create a barrier of sound that will help uphold the core principles of an equitable world, namely decency, tolerance, honesty, and respect for the rule of law. In essence, the individual artists comprising the group play second fiddle to their message and its collective urgency. Functioning almost as an ongoing artistic front line, OpCritical pledged to put out constant musical as well as visual output until they were able to stir up any opposition to the mounting injustices dividing America. Their latest offering came out on May 15th and is called “Doing Fine.” Let us now delve deeper into what this intense song conveys. Let us take a closer look at this song.
The song starts with a short, humanizing giggle and then a sudden count-off of three, before abruptly plunging us into a full-blown, powerful tune built upon an imposing backdrop of precise drums and piercing guitars. An intense introduction that makes you stop and listen immediately. There is a sense of tension from the get-go; even before a single line of lyrics is heard, there is something about the way this tune plays its instruments that leaves no room for anything but total focus on listening to whatever message this band has to say.
“Doing Fine” is a remarkably humorous social critique of the oppressive power of societal conformity. In today’s age, where everything is dictated by the cacophony of politics and echo chambers of social media, taking your own path is an act of defiance. There is institutional pressure in all corners to bow your head and conform to a mold, be it in a restrictive home, a prejudiced religious group, an indoctrinating institution, or even a literal and figurative prison. This particular track brings an uncompromising message of hope, assuring the listener that those who choose not to conform and face the pressure of becoming part of the herd are no strangers; on the contrary, they are unique and amazing beings doing just fine in life. This track serves as much-needed inspiration, encouraging one to go against the flow and celebrate one’s individuality. Fundamentally, the track demonstrates how strongly the band believes that groupthink and conformity prevent people from realizing their full potential and being creative in all aspects of life. As the band puts it, “People will only truly be happy if they’re able to express themselves for who they really are.” Individuality is considered an inherent characteristic of Americans, and yet in recent decades, it has slowly faded away due to organizations and political parties. “We want people to come to terms with their true selves,” says OpCritical.
In terms of production, music, and lyrics, both the song itself and the related video were designed specifically to capture the rebel spirit of those who were part of the Grunge and Punk periods, both of which were marked by an outburst of opposition to imposed conformity. The OpCritical’s video acts as an artistic way of rebelling against the oppressive nature of the social norms that attempt to squeeze everyone into one standardized mold, such as schools, churches, and prisons. The song’s main lyrical theme, “I won’t fit into your box, leave me alone,” sounds as though it was created from broken glass, and serves as an extremely vivid call-to-arms for anyone who finds themselves completely fed up with being constantly asked to change who they are.
In a world where we always have to put on our Sunday best at all times, play by the rules, and keep a lid on our true selves, this track comes as a welcome and much-needed breath of fresh air. It provides a necessary reminder that the flames of rugged individualism have not yet been extinguished. There is a hope and comfort contained within the lines of this song, and we must thank OpCritical for being at the vanguard, letting us all know that there is an escape from the matrix and that we do not need to make that journey alone. But even stripping away the social message contained within it, the track itself is an absolute joy to listen to. OpCritical has definitely found its voice, and in doing so, they have crafted a masterpiece that will make you want more. They’ve made their presence known, and we cannot wait to hear what they come up with next.
