This is the time to roll out the red carpet once again for the unsurpassed Stephen H. Cumberbatch, the legend whose name is simply C’batch. It would be an understatement to refer to him as just an “artist”, a mere reflection of his true essence; rather, he is nothing less than the heartbeat of our era’s soundscape, an integral and pulsating cornerstone of modern excellence. In the sacred ground of creativity known as Stevette Music, Inc., this one-of-a-kind artist keeps developing his talent, providing us with yet another lesson in deep dedication through each melody he composes. He has that unique gift of turning melody into the mirror of the soul, and thereby reminding us of what a pure dedication to the art of sound is. Witnessing the progress he makes is a true privilege – the process of eternal innovations which speaks for itself about why he is an unparalleled designer of our favorite sonic spaces. It is only right to say that I feel ever-indebted to him because of the spiritual transcendence of “Song for God”, catharsis of “Trapped (I’m Doing Fine)” and the profound emotional connection of the entire Next Time (I won’t be falling) EP. The alchemy in his music lies in his ability to penetrate into the depths of our soul and give voice to those feelings we couldn’t put into words. In any case, he has granted us a mammoth testament to his endless talent by creating the twenty-track opus, “C’batch The Vault 2 Soul/RNB/Pop/Rock/Reggae”. What’s most impressive about it is that it’s a single seamless work made up of the finest golden fibers of Soul, R&B, Pop, Rock, and Reggae. It’s not just a record of his music; it’s an unparalleled feat in modern-day composition.
The album starts with “Will This Be The Last Time?” This track begins with a soft melody and mouth percussion sound. The intro gives off this 90s type of RNB music like a Boyz To Men type of song. This song describes a state of being caught up in a cycle of making mistakes and not knowing how to break free from that feeling. The character in the song admits that he’s fallen in love with his one night stand. It seems like they agreed to be intimate with no strings attached because she is in a relationship with someone else but, he has fallen for her so, he asks her if this will be the last time they will be together. Musically. , the vocals have soft raspiness that can be heard in the lower register, while there’s minimalistic piano and percussion playing in the background makes the song the perfect RNB song that you can play on repeat
The song “Giving You All My Love” starts off with an upbeat and rising synthesizer glissando that immediately changes the atmosphere to something much more open and uplifting. This particular song works as a declaration of emotional honesty, whereby the lyrics peel back the shield of pride to showcase complete devotion. The character in the song lets the object of her desire and affection that she’s giving him all her love. This song is perfect for setting the mood for that intimate time between you and your lover. In terms of the music, it is marked by a richly produced song with these small swells along with a rhythmic melody. The effect is that of complete vulnerability, as if one had been exposed to a very intimate experience of humanity that is unforgettable
The “Word Is Out (Will I Get Over You?)” track begins with a staccato snare strike, which is then succeeded by an edgy bass guitar riff. The theme of the song is about a character who has found out that her partner has been taken for a fool. In this sense, the lyrics describe the shame that the singer feels about his/her heartbreak, since it has becomes public knowledge for others. She talks about how she’s the last to know about her partner’s infidelity and lets him know that someone told on him so, she’s leaving him. Musically, the song is hectic and chaotic to reflect the panic of the narrator, while vocally, the performer speaks in a fast-paced manner.
Regarding “Found What’s Right for Me (Alternate Version)”, the track is characterized by the soft, sensory experience of the touch of fingers moving across nylon guitar strings, evoking the idea of intimacy and stasis. The song is a contemplative journey through one’s discovery of oneself, lyrically describing finding one’s place and being content after years of turmoil and searching. The song also can be a song that represents a character who has went through a bad breakup. She grieved, reclaimed her autonomy and can now move around with her head held high. However you understand this song, it is important to know that the song represents the resiliency of the and the unbreakable nature of the human spirit. The track has a sparse and acoustic musicality that allows the listener to pay attention to the vocal intonation, which sounds casual and unpolished, bringing the listener closer to the real story of the artist’s development.
“Hey Victoria” kicks off with a cavernous, reverberating drum beat that echoes as if played in an empty warehouse, slowly joined by a haunting, high-pitched synth whistle. The song portrays a character who is trying to convince Victoria to be his. His line “it is in cards”, might be cheesy, but he said regardless, making sure that she knows that they are destined to be together The vocal performance is breathy and ethereal, and very clear. It floats over a bed of low-frequency bass pads, which produces a profound impact of distance and nostalgic ache, truly embodying the yearning tone of the title.
The song “Call on Me” begins with just one piano chord which eventually dies down to give way to a bass line that sounds walking and soulful to produce a sense of total stability right from the outset. The concept of the song is all about radical reliability, and its lyrics are a promise of never being less than a constant throughout whatever the situation. It’s nice to know that we have someone we can call on when we need someone or something and know that this person will help us or at least, be a listening ear. Its music is quite deep and traditional and uses lovely R&B methods such as horn stabs and harmonic backing vocals to produce a sense of safety.
In “Round & Round,” the song begins with a mesmerizing, slow yet captivating drum beat and mouth percussion that increases in tempo, deliberately inducing feelings of disorientation and entrapment. In the lyrics, the circularity of the harmful pattern is broken down, as well as the frustration involved in escaping oneself from one’s own destructive tendencies. The vocals are rushed, adding tension to the synthetic and whirlpool-like tune, which mirrors being trapped in a whirlwind. The effect is physical as the listener feels trapped in the cycle represented in the song title.
The song that follows is “Next Time (I Won’t Be Falling)”. The song has an introduction that starts with the resonating sound of a filter sweep that can be compared to the sound of a heavy door opening in an empty room at night, followed immediately by the dead sound of the stick hitting the snare. These sounds create a sterile environment for the track. In this song, we meet a character who is kicking himself for falling in love. Now make no mistake, this isn’t a breakup song, the character says he won’t fall next time because, he has no control over his feelings. This woman has got a hold on him, he even gives an analogy with a bee!, come on, our character is head over heels and he’s definitely over the deep end. The feeling of this character is not new, when we fall in love and get hurt or it ends in a bad way, we swear to ourselves, never to lose control of our emotions every again but, more often that not, when we know deep in our hearts that love is not on our bingo cards, boom! It hits us like lightning!. On the musical level, the performance starts with a sterile, close miced performance. The vocalist delivers the vocal track without any atmospheric effects, which reveals the hesitance and grit in the vocals. The instrumental part is quite compelling and it is interesting to watch the persona in the song try to stop himself from falling in love when he can’t
The song “All Things are Possible (Alternate Version), begins with an atmospheric texture with a feel of ascending light through the use of ethereal synth sounds and soft mallets. “All Things Are Possible” is about looking up to someone who can do anything. This person’s love and guidance is something we can rely on and He will never fail us. Even if you’re not Christian or religious, it’s good to recognize that there’s someone out there who will be able to give us everything in totality. The lyrics create a picture of an optimistic world where everything is perfectly aligned. Musically, the song is broad and powerful with a soaring vocal line that draws your attention.
“Can I Hold On?” begins an electric guitar line that sounds magical. The song speaks about a character who has admitted that there’s nothing left to fight for in his relationship. He then questions if he can be able to hold on and keep fighting for nothing. The song is performed in an impassioned vocal delivery peppered with breaks and cracks that reflect the fragile nature of the question asked within the title.
“(Mi Wan Yu Fi) Rock Dat Pum Pum (Reggae)”starts off with an intense, high-energy blast of brass instruments and a typical reggae guitar rhythm which requires the listener to move his body. The message being conveyed in this song is one of celebration and the sensual liberation of dancing. The music has many layers and a rich warmth to it, with deep bass lines that make your body move to its beat. This song acts as a refreshing release from the other more thoughtful songs.
Moving on to DISC 2, the other tracks, which include “Will This Be The Last Time?,” “Giving You All My Love (Alternate Version),” “Hey Victoria (Alternate Vocal Version),” “Call On Me (Alternate Vocal Version),” “Next Time (I Won’t Be Falling) (2),” “Round & Round (3),” “All Things are Possible,” “Can I Hold On? (Alternate version 2),” and “(Mi Wan Yu Fi) Rock Dat Pum Pum (Alternate version)” are very important supplementary pieces to the main set of songs. They are the equivalent of a photographer viewing the same scenery through various angles, some taking away all the production to reveal the core of the songs while others add on to the vocal or instrumental layerings. In doing this, the album makes it possible for the listener to engage with the songwriting process as an alive and constantly developing process, thus giving the impression that even when returning to those same songs, the listener is going to discover some additional emotions or musical aspects they missed before.
Through his second studio album titled The Vault 2, C’batch isn’t only creating a unique archive but bestowing his audience a perfect restoration of their souls. It’s not only his follow-up but a spectacular journey through kaleidoscopic world of sounds that shows the true courage of the artist without any ties to one genre or another. While blending such genres like Soul, R&B, Pop, Rock, and even Reggae, C’batch manages to form a consistent picture in which every note and every sound become important for the listener. What resonates with me most is the closeness of the storytelling process, because C’Batch is such an expert in what he does that his lyrics sound more like whisperings of personal stories about love and heartache and deep introspection than songs. Listening to this album is like being witness to an artist’s renaissance happening right before your ears—a process so smooth and bold at once that it is as though he was recreating the whole language of modern music bit by bit. Listening to an album like this one makes you wish for the absence of a “skip” button on your player because everything here is perfect and cannot be missed. In other words, The Vault 2 is an absolute masterpiece. Being able to witness C’batch keep innovating and pushing the soundscape forward in such a deeply human way that he connects with his audience is a true privilege. This revolution will be televised indeed!. I have found myself constantly being sucked into the gravity of this album, already anxiously awaiting the next step in what is clearly an amazing musical journey.
