COREY MORRIS DAZZLES WITH “BEFORE THE SHINE,” DELIVERING A MASTERCLASS IN RAW SOUL AND UNAPOLOGETIC ARTISTRY

Corey Morris, an artist based in Houston, is stealthily forging himself a legacy lane within the contemporary music landscape through an extremely personal and highly introspective methodology of making music that he does not bow to industry whims and fads. His muse is not the secondhand musical content inspired by other artists but his own experiences and the unbridled insights offered by the people around him. Thus, his art is authentically aggressive and brimming with reality and the palpable pulse of humanity. This is best exemplified in his impressive five-song EP, entitled Before The Shine, that comes out on July 30. Let’s explore the magic of this extraordinary album together.

The EP begins with the gentle crackling sound of vinyl records being played on a turntable at night, followed by the slow movement of bass notes that help set up an introspective and midnight tone in “Star Talk II”. In terms of lyrics, the track is a conversation that takes place within oneself about the tough period of waiting between sowing the seeds and reaping the results, all about ambition, doubts, and self-reflection in solitude. The character in the song isn’t coy, though; he’s bold and brazen and doesn’t waste the chance to let you know that he’s unique, and there’s no replica of him. I don’t know what he’s selling, but I’m definitely buying it. Instrumentally, there is a lot of emphasis on the jazzy boom-bap beat that is filled with a melancholy horn loop that envelops the steady percussive pocket. The way Corey raps has a conversational tone that reflects his directness when communicating his experience rather than entertaining the crowd. To the listener, the result is very grounding since it demands you to take everything out of your system and assess yourself realistically about what you want to achieve.

The mood of this song is quite different as “This Is Not The One” opens up with a threatening, underground bass beat coupled with a sharp, ringing snare sound. On lyrical terms, the song becomes a strong statement about setting boundaries with its focus on the issue of self-protection, loyalty, and cutting down deceitful energy. Morris gives us an insight into the world which is full of treacherous elements when each hand that is offered is not always sincere; however, he lets us know that even in that circle, he’s still king. From the instrumentation side of things, the track has a dark, cinematic underground vibe that features eerie and drifting synth pads coupled with a repetitive piano loop which creates intense tension with each passing second. Vocal-wise, Corey takes charge and delivers a powerful cadence, delivering bars in such an easy yet captivating way that one can’t help but focus on his delivery. The result is an intense adrenaline rush and a feeling of clarity that makes it perfect for those who are learning how to break free from harmful situations.

Energy shifts towards a very nostalgic and culturally rich place as “Still Bump Field Mob” gets off to a soulful sampled vocal chopping up an old record followed by a deep thumping southern style drum kit. In terms of lyrical content, the track is an ode to the importance of having strong roots, enduring, and sticking to the influences that helped shape you when you get famous. The character in the song also makes sure that we know that he will do anything to get his bag and succeed. From a musical standpoint, it is an outstanding example of how to combine the organic and the digital through the use of warm, rolling bass sounds combined with sounds of vinyl pops and horn stabs, giving the song an undeniable timeless feel. As for vocals, Morris rides the pocket with a smooth, swinging rhythm that flows naturally with his innate understanding of music and rhythm. It gives the listener a lot of inspirational quips to keep us on our toes.

At the height of the emotional journey of the project, the EP begins with the soft loop of a reflective acoustic guitar lick, which gives way to the song called “Gotta Shine One Day”. This song is one of the best lyrics on this album as it describes the painful yet hopeful phase of waiting between work and success. Morris reveals his thoughts concerning whether or not the endless working and hustle will finally bring some results. His hopefulness in this song is very inspiring, and it makes you want to get up off your ass and get to work, especially if you want to achieve your goal. As far as the music is concerned, the production opens up to form an elaborate atmosphere with the help of a slow drum beat along with some amazing background vocals that give it a heavenly vibe. Corey manages to put all of his ambition and effort into his song with his melodic and weathered voice. The effect on the listener is very emotional, and it serves as an excellent comfort zone for dreamers and hard workers alike.

The album concludes with “What Really Matters?” with the delicate background sounds of urban traffic gradually fading out and replaced by the rich, resonant sounds of a well-played organ keys to create an air of ultimate vulnerability. There’s a distorted sound right after the intro. The lyrics in the track are a deeply reflective stock-taking of one’s life and completely disregard measures of success and prosperity in the external world. The main message of this song, though, is that no matter what happens, we gotta get up when we fall. The song tells us to keep pushing forward because it’s the only thing that matters. Not when we fail, not when we fall, but instead, it’s about whether we keep going forward or not. Humans are resilient, and this song is proof of that. In terms of music, his use of instrumentation is beautiful and minimalistic, with his voice being left open and not overshadowed by delicate keys and a simple bass drum. In terms of vocals, Corey’s sound is raw and exposed, expressing the most vulnerable emotions in an honest and soulful manner, which comes off as a sincere late-night confession. What results from all of this is a haunting effect which leaves one sitting in complete silence pondering the important things in life.

And this unique EP acts as the victorious first installment of a huge line-up of albums due to be released throughout the year, all flawlessly culminating in his highly anticipated double album Free Shine II, thereby leaving no room for doubt regarding how Corey Morris is an unstoppable visionary, brimming with ambitions and having an unlimited wealth of music lined up. Before The Shine is a breathtaking class in mastering the basics of music, the pure essence of music wherein lies its sanctity, capturing the lightning-in-a-bottle feeling of when music was all about the sanctity of art itself. The title cleverly exposes Morris’s conscious return to that fiery place where he first discovered himself as a creator, a place where it was him against the world, battling alone through long nights fueled only by that fierce desire to create. Man, what an artist. Congrats to Morris on creating something so beautiful and profound; we can’t get enough of it, and we’re already waiting on the edge of our seats to hear what he comes up with next.
