It is our pleasure to introduce the immensely talented US-based musician Jovial Phenom, a genius whose day job lies in the realms of logic associated with the field of software engineering and tech entrepreneurship, but whose nights belong to the realm of the raw, edgy, experimental world of hip-hop music. The 4th of July saw Jovial Phenom release one of his finest tracks ever, “Racks On My Mind,” which proves yet again how much of a genius Jovial is. If you thought that you had any idea how far indie hip-hop music can go, you are about to have your mind blown completely.
The music emerges out of nowhere through a highly addictive and incredibly funky rhythm that compels your feet to dance even before you become conscious of the fact. Very quickly, the song delivers its incredibly hypnotizing hook, a slick, powerful delivery of the title lyric of “racks on my mind”, and there we go; the rap performance is now delivered with such intense confidence. The moment the music starts, one can feel the immense fire and swagger of this track, which indicates just how thrilling a ride you are about to experience.
The tale starts with the arrival of a foreclosure notice in the artist’s mailbox on his 25th birthday, thereby changing the mood from a festive one to that of introspection as he had to look at papers that could possibly alter the course of his life. But this was not the end of this tragic tale since three months down the line, the world decided to test him again when he found a bag full of cash in the subway station. Choosing to give it to the concerned authority marked a turning point for him, and in one stroke, the truth was revealed about the intricate connection between money and human nature. Talking further about this song, the song was made possible through a strenuous process of 21 days, which is the period during which he survived in life using only $3 a day. This experience was a lesson of utmost importance as it enabled him to make his consciousness vibrate at the frequency of abundance in spite of his empty stomach, which constantly reminded him of scarcity. This was the time of chaos due to the global cryptocurrency crash that occurred in the year 2022, in which overnight millionaires became common citizens. The truth about millionaire mentality lies with common men and women.
But once the superficial bravado is stripped away, the depth of this work shines through in all its glory – a psychological dissection of money. No – this track is not simply some cheap flex, but an unapologetic dive into the way money haunts us, motivates us, and even destroys us from the inside out. It was recorded in the eerie, cavernous atmosphere of a real-life abandoned bank vault, giving the production an almost ghostly quality, with the use of deteriorating equipment and layered whispers to capture not only the overwhelming noise of the outside world, but the silent, echoing fears of internal struggle. Sound-wise, the track is firmly set in the visionary landscape of gritty lo-fi hip-hop, thick trap bass, and soulful soundscapes, mixed with elements of pure strangeness and unearthliness. But that is not the full extent of the brilliance, as hidden among all these sounds are Easter eggs such as frequency shifts, reversed vocals, and Fibonacci numbers.
The path this musician took in his development can be rightfully called a brilliant glitch of fate, a glitch that was unplanned, unorthodox, and working perfectly well due to some strange genius. In this audio blend, everything can be found: roughness of raw hip-hop, dynamic intensity of heavy trap, and those contagious house tracks that will not let you stop. The result of such a blend is truly amazing: a soundscape that is chaotic, eclectic, and unpredictable, and which captures the essence of that mad and exciting feeling during a coding marathon gone out of control at midnight. As for me, I could not help but be impressed with the sharp humor present in his lyrics and with how easily and effortlessly the rap tracks are delivered. Jovial Phenom is an incredible source of creative talent, and the anticipation of his next work is painful.
