There have been numerous highs and lows throughout John Stamos’ protracted battle with alcoholism. However, there was a certain point in his journey that inspired him to truly start cleaning up – and keep it up.
In his debut memoir, If You Would Have Told Me, out Oct. 24, the Full House alum details the many low points of his alcohol addiction — and how sobriety has shaped him in the long run.

After receiving national attention for his DUI in 2015, Stamos’ addiction reached a breaking point. “After getting that DUI, I thought, ‘I can’t do this. He recalls hearing, “I’ve got to straighten up. “That’s when I was confusing the universe because I’m not a bad person, but I was doing crappy things.”

The former General Hospital alum now thanks his wife Caitlin McHugh Stamos and their 5-year-old son Billy for keeping him on this path of positivity and recovery. “They have maintained me on this route since everyone attempts to follow the path of sobriety and self-care. Everyone practises it. For a while, you could move along. “After that, it’s like, ‘I can’t drink again,'” he claims. “So it’s staying on the path is what they mostly do for me.”
