Doechii BIOGRAPHY

American rapper and singer Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon (born August 14, 1998) is better known by her stage name, Doechii (formerly iamdoechii). Following the release of her debut EP, Oh the Places You’ll Go (2020), she became well-known in 2021 after her song “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” went viral on TikTok. After signing with Capitol Records and Top Dawg Entertainment, Doechii released her second EP, She/Her/Black Bitch, in 2022. Since then, she has achieved commercial success with the singles “Persuasive” (featuring SZA) and “What It Is (Block Boy)” (featuring Kodak Black), which debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time. Doechii has been nominated for two MTV Video Music Awards and was given the Rising Star Award by Billboard Women in Music in 2023.

EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION

On August 14, 1998, Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon was born in Tampa, Florida, and raised there as well.Her early activities included ballet, tap dancing, acting, cheerleading, and gymnastics. CAREER

In 2016, under the name Iamdoechii, she made her SoundCloud debut with her song “Girls,” which she had begun producing in 2015.2019 saw the publication of her project, Coven Music Session, Vol. 1. Oh the Places You’ll Go, Doechii’s self-funded debut EP, was published in 2020.Rolling Stone characterised it as a blend of hip hop, dance, and pop.Record companies took notice of her after the single “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” from the September 2020 EP went viral on TikTok in 2021, drawing inspiration from her reading of The Artist’s Way

She also released her second EP, Bra-Less, in 2021. She opened for SZA on her 2021 tour and was a featured artist on Isaiah Rashad’s song “Wat U Sed” from his album The House Is Burning, which she performed with Rashad at the 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards.She became the first female rapper to be signed to Top Dawg Entertainment and Chris Turner (A&R)’s Capitol Records in March 2022.She made her Top Dawg debut with “Persuasive” that same month, and she collaborated with Missy Elliott and Bia on the song “Trampoline” by David Guetta and Afrojack.

She released “Crazy” in April 2022, a song that features an aggressive rapping/yelling approach. In order to challenge sexualized stereotypes of Black women and present female nudity away from the male gaze, Doechii and filmmaker C Prinz created a music video that features her and other Black women fighting one other (catfighting), occasionally with guns, mostly naked in a parking lot.

August 5, 2022 saw the publication of She / Her / Black Bitch, her second EP and her first major label release. At the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards, her performance of the song “Persuasive” in July 2022 was nominated for Push Performance of the Year. In April 2023, Doechii gave a performance at the 22nd Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
