Donnie McClurkin BIOGRAPHY

Born on November 9, 1959, Donald Andrew McClurkin Jr. is an American clergyman and gospel singer. In addition to ten Stellar Awards, two BET Awards, two Soul Train Awards, one Dove Award, and one NAACP Image Award, he has won three Grammy Awards. With more than 10 million records sold globally, he is among the best-selling gospel musicians. McClurkin was labelled a “Reigning King of Urban Gospel” by Variety.

EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION

Copiague, New York is the birthplace of McClurkin.His brother, who was two years old, was murdered by a speeding car when he was eight years old. McClurkin’s brother’s death shortly after the loss caused family strife

McClurkin found comfort in attending church and in his aunt’s background vocals, who performed gospel music alongside Andraé Crouch. He started the McClurkin Singers while he was a youngster, and he later founded the New York Restoration Choir, which has records dating back to 1975.

CAREER

In 1989, he was appointed as an associate minister at Detroit, Michigan’s Perfecting Church, founded by Marvin Winans.McClurkin worked with Winans for more than ten years as an assistant.

His signing to the label for his 1996 self-titled LP, which featured producers Bill Maxwell, Mark Kibble of Take 6, Cedric, and Victor Caldwell along with Andraé Crouch, came about as a result of his friendship with a Warner Alliance executive. The album, which included the timeless hit “Stand,” quickly achieved gold status following Oprah Winfrey’s public endorsement

Dovetailing off the success of his near double-platinum selling album,”Live in London and More” McClurkin released “Psalms,Hymns and Spiritual Songs” in 2005 and “We All Are One: Live In Detroit” in 2009 which also topped Billboard charts across various musical genres. McClurkin’s love for people and desire to share gospel music, globally, is the reason he includes a language medley: Japanese, Russian, Spanish, and Dutch in most live performances.

He also had a cable television show called Perfecting Your Faith that aired in 2009. Among the shows he has been on television are Girlfriends, The Parkers, The Early Show on CBS, The View, and Good Morning America. He has also appeared in films like The Fighting Temptations and The Gospel. He portrayed either a church pastor or a single man in these shows.

Matthew, McClurkin’s son, was born in 2000. Additionally connected to McClurkin is singer Marsha McClurkin of the brief-lived New Jack Swing outfit.
