Ice Spice BIOGRAPHY

Isis Naija Gaston, also known as Ice Spice, is an American rapper who was born on January 1, 2000. After meeting American record producer RiotUSA in 2021, she started her musical career. She was born and reared in the Bronx in New York City

With the release of her song “Munch (Feelin’ U)” on TikTok in late 2022, Ice Spice first attracted widespread attention. In preparation for her debut EP, Like..? (2023), she released “Bikini Bottom” and “In Ha Mood” in the weeks that followed. With the “Gangsta Boo” collaboration with Lil Tjay, she made her debut on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. As a result of her work on the singles “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2″ (with Pink Pantheress), “Princess Diana” (with Nicki Minaj), “Karma” (with Taylor Swift), and “Barbie World” (with Minaj and Aqua), which all debuted in the Hot 100’s top 10, Ice Spice became well-known. In 2023, she became the first artist to have four Hot 100 top-10 singles.

Isis Naija Gaston was born on January 1st, 2000 in the Bronx, New York City[6][7][8] and grew up in the Fordham Road area. The oldest of five siblings, she is.[9] Her mother Charina Almanzar, a Dominican who worked at a car dealership and gave birth to Gaston at the age of 17, and her father Joseph Gaston, a former underground rapper, are both of African American descent.[10] When Gaston was two years old, the couple divorced after initially meeting at a McDonald’s[11].[12][13][14][9]

She began to enjoy hip hop at the age of seven after discovering artists like Lil’ Kim, Nicki Minaj, and others. From elementary school to high school, she created poetry and freestyle raps. Ice said in a Billboard interview that due of her father’s rap history, she grew up listening to artists like Jay-Z, 50 Cent, and the Wu-Tang Clan.[4] While rapping aloud to hip-hop instrumentals, she would type out rhymes in the Notes app on her iPhone.[16][17][13] “When I saw Nicki [Minaj], I was so mesmerised,” Ice Spice said. I’ve never seen a female rapper before. I kind of had my mind made up about what I wanted to be ever since. She selected the stage name Ice Spice.

Ice Spice graduated from Sacred Heart High in 2018 and attended State University of New York at Purchase, where she was a defensive specialist on the school’s volleyball team and studied biology.[16][18][19][20] In seven matches, she had two kills and nine digs in the 2018 season.[20]

Around her sophomore year, Ice Spice dropped out of SUNY Purchase, explaining that she did not believe the school was the right fit for her and attributing her “strenuous commute” for leaving college.[16]

When Ice Spice was a student at State University of New York at Purchase in 2021, she met the record producer RiotUSA and decided to start rapping.[21] After a video of Ice Spice completing the “Buss It” challenge went viral on Twitter, he produced her debut single, “Bully Freestyle,” which was made available in March 2021.[11] She became well-known on Instagram when her song “Name of Love” acquired popularity on SoundCloud.[22]

On August 10, 2022, Ice Spice released her song “Munch (Feelin’ U)“, accompanied with a video distributed by WorldStarHipHop,[23] as the lead single from her then-untitled debut EP, Like..?. The song gained popularity after getting support from Drake, who played the song on his Sirius XM radio station, Sound 42.[12] It subsequently went viral on Twitter and TikTok, and charted on Billboards Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Bubbling Under Hot 100 charts.[24][25][13] In September 2022, Ice Spice appeared as a featured artist on the song “One Time” by B-Lovee.[26] Later that month, she signed a record deal with 10K Projects and Capitol Records.[27] On October 28, she released the single “Bikini Bottom“.[28] Ice Spice’s debut EP, Like..?, was released on July January 20, 2023, and included the singles “Munch (Feelin’ U)”, “Bikini Bottom”, and “In Ha Mood“.[29]

She collaborated with Nicki Minaj to create the “Princess Diana” remix in April 2023.[32] The song became Ice Spice’s second top-ten smash on the list and Minaj’s twenty-second top-ten hit when it peaked at number four on the Hot 100.[33] A remix of Taylor Swift’s song “Karma” with Ice Spice was unveiled on May 24, 2023, and it will be available on May 26, 2023. The remix can be found as a bonus track on Swift’s Midnights (2022) special edition albums.[34] On May 27, Swift and Ice Spice appeared in a music video for the remix. 2023 was dubbed as Ice Spice’s breakthrough year by Pitchfork.[35] Ice Spice became the artist with the most Hot 100 top-five singles after “Karma” reached at number two on the Hot 100.

The majority of Ice Spice’s songs is Bronx drill.[38][39] She created a “finsta” (fake Instagram account) when she was 14 and gave it that name.[40] She has claimed that all of her lyrics are original.[9] In 2022, Ice Spice listed Coldplay’s “Yellow” and the 1975’s “Sex” in an article titled “My Life in 10 Songs”: “When I was 13 or 14, I constantly listened to [The 1975]. Because they are from Europe and Matty Healy had that accent, I believe it was my fault. For me, it was a thing.[41] Sheff G and Pop Smoke were the first to get her interested in rapping, and she has cited Lil’ Kim, Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Foxy Brown, and Remy Ma as musical influences as a result of their styles.
