BIOGRAPHY

Peter Okoye, also known as Mr. P is no doubt Nigeria’s most popular musician who choreographs. Peter or Mr. P, is the twin brother of Paul Okoye, also known as Rudeboy. and a member of the defunct P-Square group; a sensational group comprising of the two twin brothers and were notably recognized for their incredible music videos, the burst of energies, melodious songs, and well-choreographed performances. Sadly, the duo fell apart after failing to resolve their irreconcilable differences.

Sometimes referred to as the African Usher Raymond, Mr. P’s solo career has experienced steady growth and keeps defying odds despite the several backlashes from fans of the defunct group (P-Square) that claim Rudeboy seems to be doing better. In this post, we discuss the biography of Peter Okoye, also known as Mr. P.

Peter Okoye (born 18 November 1981), popularly known by his stage name ‘Mr P‘, is a Nigerian musician, songwriter and recording artist and a member of the defunct P-Square group. He is from Ifite, Dunu area of Anambra State. Peter Okoye attended St. Murumba secondary school in Jos, Nigeria and then later proceeded to the University of Abuja to study Business Administration.

Although Peter is from Anambra State, he was born in Jos with his twin brother, Paul. The duo had their secondary school in Jos, at St. Murumba Secondary School and later went to the University of Abuja where they studied Business Administration.

Peter joined his school music and drama club, alongside his brother where they began singing, dancing, and mimicking songs by MC Hammer, Bobby Brown and Michael Jackson.

They would later co-form an Acappella quartet called “MMMPP” (M Clef a.k.a. Itemoh, Michael, Melvin, Peter, and Paul). Drawing inspiration from their music idol Michael Jackson, they began break dancing, formed the group called “Smooth Criminals” in 1997. They dropped M Clef from the group “MMMPP” which later was changed to “MMPP”. Their artistic talent and precise dance routine soon made them household names in the city of Jos, where they performed at school functions and other occasions.

Later in 1999, Peter returned to music school to develop his skills on the keyboard, drums, bass and rhythm guitar, alongside his twin. Their work includes the soundtracks for a number of films like Tobi, Mama Sunday, Moment of Bitterness and Evas River.

The same year, they both applied to the University of Abuja to study Business Administration. The Smooth Criminals disbanded when its members left for various other universities. Subsequently, Peter and Paul formed their own group, variously called “Double P”, “P&P”, and “Da Pees”, until they eventually settled on “P-Square”. They were managed by Bayo Odusami aka Howie T, a seasoned concert promoter and the CEO of Adrot Nigeria Limited.

Peter was the showman of the defunct P-Square group. He largely took charge of the choreography and dance moves the group performed either in live performances or in their music videos. After several back and forth with the group, the twin sensation fell apart over irreconcilable differences and chose for themselves a career path that would go on to describe them till date. Prior to falling apart, it was rumoured that influential Nigerians such as Aliko Dangote meddled in order to resolve the duo’s difference. The ending of the group signalled the collapse of their multi-million Naira endorsement with Globacom Telecommunications, Nigeria’s indigenous telecommunication company. As if that was not enough, they feel from the top of the food chain as Nigeria’s biggest artistes to what many would later dub as ‘upcoming acts’.

Peter’s strength was never in singing. Although, based on his current solo songs, there are a couple of songs we felt he must have influenced during the reign of P-Square. Songs such as Get Squared, Alingo, Danger, and other energetic songs the group probably recorded.

Peter, since his solo career, has recorded a fair amount of songs but has enjoyed little success compared to his twin brother, Paul who has been described by fans as the most successful of the duo.

Peter has recorded a handful of songs, including One More Night, Karma, Cool Down, Wokie Wokie and For my Head. Despite being fairly consistent, he is often being criticized for his pattern of music which is mainly characterized by his colourful and energetic choreographies.

Peter Okoye, popularly called Mr P is married to Lola Omotayo-Okoye, his long-time girlfriend and they both have two kids, a boy, and a girl. Andre, Mr P’s first son is an emerging football star who is presently at the Barcelona Academy in Spain. Lola Omotayo is said to be older than Peter Okoye (Mr P).

Peter Okoye, also known as Mr P is one of Nigeria’s richest musicians with an estimated net worth of $11 million. He is also the CEO and owner of Zoom Lifestyle Lottery and owns a mansion in Atlanta, Georgia, beside his twin brother’s.
