Summer Marjani Walker is an American R&B singer-songwriter from Atlanta, Georgia. She was born on April 11, 1996. She inked a recording deal with the regional label Love Renaissance, an Interscope Records imprint, in November 2017.Her first commercial mixtape, Last Day of Summer, was released the following year, and its hit “Girls Need Love” made her debut on the Billboard Hot 100. Drake, a Canadian rapper, appeared on a remix of the song.The Hot 100 top 20 single “Playing Games” was inspired by Walker’s debut studio album Over It, which was widely praised by critics and published in October 2019.

EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION

Atlanta, Georgia, is where Walker was born. Before learning how to play the guitar on her own by following YouTube lessons, she performed as an exotic dancer in Atlanta from 2016 to 2018. She also operated a small cleaning company during that time. Not long after, she started doing cover songs and uploaded several self-filmed videos to the website.

CAREER

Walker was found by a lady who shares her name and is the studio manager for Love Renaissance, an Atlanta-based record company.She joined with Interscope Records with this label in 2017. With “Girls Need Love” serving as the lead track, Walker’s first commercial mixtape, Last Day of Summer, was released on October 19, 2018. Walker’s CD included her reflections on womanhood, love, and uncertainty.

Playing Games” is the first official single off Walker’s debut studio album, Over It, which was released on August 23, 2019.Produced by London on da Track, the song features an interpolation of the number-one hit single “Say My Name” by Destiny’s Child. Walker announced on September 12 that Over It would be available through LVRN and Interscope Records on October 4.She released the official album artwork along with the news of her record. At the US Billboard 200, Over It made its debut with 134,000 units in its first week at number two. In terms of on-demand audio streams, its premiere week was the biggest ever for an R&B album by a female singer.

Walker worked with American rapper 21 Savage on the song “Secret” at the beginning of 2020. Walker also made an appearance on Justin Bieber’s “Yummy” remix. She appeared on Khalid’s “Eleven” remix in April 2020. Walker declared on June 29 that her EP, Life on Earth, would be out on July 10. Walker was nominated for Best New Artist and Best Female R&B/Pop Artist at the 2020 BET Awards, where she performed “Session 32″ and “Come Thru” alongside Usher. The announcement was made the day after the performances.

She repackaged the Over It album and published it as Over It (Complete Edition) on November 23. All 18 of the songs from the original album are included in the repackaged version, along with extra instrumentals, a capella interpretations, live performances, and more. December 10th saw the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certify Walker’s debut song, “Session 32,” as gold and her joint single with Jhené Aiko, “I’ll Kill You,” as platinum.

Walker’s second album, Still Over It, was released on November 5, 2021. Since then, it has shattered the record for the biggest R&B debut on the US albums chart, which dates back to Beyoncé’s Lemonade. The album sold over 166,000 copies in its first week of availability. Walker and Ari Lennox collaborated on a performance of the song “Unloyal” at the 2021 Soul Train Music Awards on November 29.

On March 21, 2022, the “No Love” extended remix starring Cardi B was revealed. It and a music video were released on March 25. Walker received her first Grammy Award nomination in May when she appeared on Kendrick Lamar’s song “Purple Hearts” from the 2022 album Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers.Ciara and Walker released the track “Better Thangs” on September 28, 2022.38 On September 30, the official music video—which was directed by Mia Barnes—made its internet debut.
