Victoria Monet BIOGRAPHY

Born on May 1, 1989, Victoria Monét McCants is an American singer-songwriter. Early involvement in the performing arts led Monét to eventually pursue a career in music. She started creating songs quickly and collaborated with producer Rodney Jerkins. Monét, who was formerly contracted to Atlantic Records, put issued a number of EPs in the middle to late 2010s. To acclaim from music critics, she released her fifth EP, Jaguar, in 2020, along with its single “Experience” (with Khalid and SG Lewis). The popular song “On My Mama” from her debut album Jaguar II (2023) led to seven nominations for her at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist and Record of the Year (for “On My Mama”).

 

EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION

Monét was raised in Sacramento, California, after being born in Atlanta, Georgia. Cassaundria Lovett, a native of Mobile, Alabama, was her maternal grandmother. Her mother is L’Tanya Chestang-Cubit, née Lovett. Michael Cubit, Jr. is the name of her half-brother.

She participated in church choir and performed in holiday plays while attending a Catholic elementary school. She started her own dancing club in junior high school, which led to her becoming a teacher at two dance studios.Persuaded by her mother to move, she was able to enrol in Sheldon High School in Sacramento, which offered a performing arts curriculum.

CAREER

She started working on music for Diddy Dirty Money’s 2010 album, Last Train to Paris. Before sending the demos out, she sung the song hooks herself and kept writing new ones. She hoped the labels would be so impressed with her rendition that they would continue to support her as a feature.

Monét’s first EP, Nightmares & Lullabies: Act 1, was released on October 30, 2014, and her second EP, Nightmares & Lullabies Act 2, was published on June 17, 2015, both through Atlantic Records. Monét selected the name because it reflected the EPs’ music, which was a combination of mellow melodies and a dark beat.

The song “Smoke,” which features Lucky Daye, was released by Monét on March 24, 2023. It is her first new single since 2021. The singles “On My Mama” and “Party Girls” (with Buju Banton) were released on June 16 and May 10, respectively, after “Smoke”. On May 26, a dancehall version of “Party Girls” featuring Michaël Brun was made available. Monét appeared on the cover of Clash magazine’s 125th issue in July of 2023.
