Greetings to all my dearest readers and music fans. Today we welcome US artist ODELET. “Raindance” is the fourth (and fifth) studio album released by singer-songwriter Odelet and her production firm “Everlasting Tape” (also the name of her film series). This ten-song album is current, genre-defying music at its finest and was released on 11th July. Let us take a closer look at this album
“Know It All” is the title track of the album. When this song started, I was mesmerized. I felt like a sailor, defenseless against the wiles of a siren. This mouth percussion was nothing short of perfection and I fell in love with it instantly. In this song, we meet a character who knows it all. This character seemingly compares him or herself to having omniscient powers. Whether this knowledge is due to life experience or trauma, this character is confident that he or she knows everything(“tell me somethin that I already don’t know”). This song has so many soul and blues components within it. The artist’s song like Miguel, a popular singer, just the vibe and the mellow vibe was just so incredible. With this song, the album is off to a good start
The next song is called “Dirge.” Odelet gives another Grammy-winning intro that is effortlessly beautiful. The song is about a character who has very high aspirations and can’t seem to get enough or feel satisfied with where he or she is. Ambition can be addictive and this song talks about it in a very beautiful way. The vocals were perfect and the instrumentation was one for the books!
Next up is a song called “Be still”. The song opens with an exciting drum beat before the vocal performance starts. The song illustrates a relationship where the woman is reminding her partner that they need to be a team. She lets him know that, together, they will be unstoppable and urges him to join her in dominating their lives. The instrumentation on this song was mid-tempo but it was still fantastic. The vocals simply devoured and this song was incredible
This next song is the album’s namesake “Raindance”. In this relaxed vibe, the song describes a character who is letting us know that she is not an open book. She lets us know that she is very protective of herself and has walls around her so high that, no one could ever go over them and can say confidently that they know her. It is hard to trust and be vulnerable in this world because, when you are vulnerable, some people can take advantage of you so, the song talks about this character’s defense mechanism. This song was so emotive and profound. The vocals were stunning and the performance just flowed out of the artist to us in a majestic way
“Jezebel” is the title of the next song on this album. This song opens yet again with an ethereal mouth percussion. This song talks about giving in to desires and pleasures. The riffs in this song just surprised me so much, I have never ever heard such a smooth and elegant riff like the one in this song. This was unbelievably beautiful.
“Bayou” is the title of the next song. This song has an exciting and captivating drum beat. The song talks about the need to show love to everyone. With such a positive message, this song is yet another stunning song on this album. It was just mesmerizing to hear, sound bouncing from one ear to the other.
“Think it over” is what the next song is called. A piano/mouth percussion melody opens up the song. In this song, the character asks her lover to think about his feelings for her. She lets him know that no matter the way he feels, they will figure their relationship out
Next is “up, up and away.” The song opens with another passionate mouth percussion. The song is about a persona who went through something bad in a relationship, this persona then realizes that her new partner was better than her ex and, when she thought it was going to be a fling or whatever, she realizes that instead, she had won the jackpot with this new new guy and was just going to love him with her everything. This song was emotive and passionate. It’s hard to talk about the performance because nothing can explain the feeling you get from listening to this song.
“Wake Up Call” is the next song on the album. The intro of this song is a smooth neo-soul sound and mouth percussion. In this song, we meet a character who has met her soulmate. She feels so good and confident in this new relationship that she says goodbye to heartache. This song talks about how fulfilling it is to finally meet someone who treats you right and loves you. This song just reminds us of that new relationship rush or love. The vocal performance was standing on business as usual and, the instrumentation worked hand in hand with the vocals to put on one hell of a show.
The last song on the album is “Sands of Time”. This song opens with a mellow melody and mouth percussion. In this song, the character pledges her love to her partner and lets him know that no matter what time or year it is, and no matter what, she will come back to him or be with him because her heart is his. This instrumentation was beautiful and the vocal performance had highs and lows that were so amazing. This incredible song ends the album
“Raindance” was mixed entirely analog by famed engineer Larry Crane, with Odelet once again providing practically all of the instrumentation. It’s complemented with a whole album of remixes done in a 1970s “Dub” style. I loved how she showcased her vocal range in this album. I was impressed by every song and every vocal performance. Odelet is a superstar and I can’t wait to hear more of her music
