August Alsina – Testimony

Testimony, the debut album of New Orleans singer August Alsina on Def Jam, is released. The club-friendly song “Numb” featuring B.o.B. and Yo Gotti, as well as the radio-charting track “I Luv This Shit” with labelmate Trinidad James, were released by Alsina in 2013. Both of these tunes aren’t on the album’s regular version, despite their widespread appeal. Alsina’s goal with Testimony is to have a more soulful and less popular approach. And it certainly does the trick.

The date of the the album’s release, April 15th, holds special meaning to Alsina because his brother was shot and killed on that same day a few years ago. On the album’s intro, “Testify,” he sings about how his brother’s death has inspired him to keep grinding. “Heard my brother got gunned down, and it hurt me to my heart/ So I kept grinding’, kept pushin’, he told me to go far.” In fact, a large portion of the album’s subject matter is about the struggle, and Alsina’s past days on the corner selling dope. It hasn’t always been easy sailing for the singer, as he describes on the following track, “Make It Home”.

Benediction,” featuring the Mastermind, is the album’s last track. Alsina continues where “Testify” left off in the outro song, singing of his brother’s untimely death and how the ordeal has transformed him. “I would cry inside so many times as I tried to hide how I felt. I would also run through the streets until my feet hurt because I didn’t want my shoes to rub against the power lines.”

August Alsina is currently leading R&B after escaping the trap unscathed. The singer’s difficult past and the obstacles he overcame to succeed are clearly depicted in his testimony. He is here to stay, and there is no turning back now. Testimony was a great debut that solidified Alsina’s place in the public eye for years to come.
