We’re also glad to revisit a pair who know the blueprint for a mood inside and out: the US-based Powers of the Monk. With David S. Monk’s soulful combination of vocals, guitar, and keyboard playing, and the violinistic and vocal talents of CasSondra “Pontiac” Powers, their collective is more a whisper shared in the darkness than a public performance per se. And with the skilled, instrumental touch given by producer Dani Macchi, who weaves such depth into the songs he produces, their effort is nothing short of an exercise in atmospheric story booking. They were last heard on this blog with the song “Strip the Bone,” which is a track that remains in the recesses of my mind, you know, because of the vibe that’s both raw, earthy, and also impossible for most musicians to attain. It’s therefore a true pleasure introducing you, in turn, to their next iteration: “Sleepy Fields,” which came out November 14th, to start us off in a whole new spiritual place altogether.
The song springs to life with a soft, dreamy melody that feels like a slow-motion exhale before the vocals even arrive. That intro is literally breathtaking: it’s the emotional ammo one needs to stay locked in because it’s also got this sense of wonder that keeps you tethered to every coming note.
This song is all about such a particular character, the “special player,” within such an environment of sounds where the clear distinctions between dreams and reality no longer exist. The storytelling within the song is not all about sleeping; it’s all about giving into all of the senses. It’s the feeling of each breath becoming less dense than the previous one until the beating of your own heart completely synchronizes with the beat of the swaying poppies within an eternally golden expanse. Within the shores of such a melody, sleeping isn’t an escape into another world; it’s an invitation into it.
Production-wise, the pair’s teamwork is so smooth that it is difficult to distinguish the point at which one stops and the other begins. It is through this complementary ability that the song can breathe and flow organically with a fluidity that imitates the fields they are singing about. It is a beautiful thing to listen to, a perfectly crafted web of peace and sleep, with the magical voices chasing each other’s harmonies on top of a beds-of-separations instrumentation that pulses like a living thing. By the time the final chords have dissipated into the air, “Sleepy Fields” has done more than simply perform a melody; it has cleared the air. The result is a deep and restorative silence that stills the very air in the room with the reminder that a world full of chaos still has a place for something so radiant and so quiet.
In a world of disposable tracks, there is one thing that I believe to be more valuable to me than anything else: intentionality, this guiding star by which I measure all of the tracks that I place on this platform. It is quite obvious that Powers of the Monk has done their homework well in this release, ensuring that every element of this release was made with purpose. The cover art is a glorious example of this. By showing the exact poppy fields that are referred to in the lyrics and the girl standing all by herself amidst all the poppies, the band makes it easier for the person listening to access the imagery through their imagination. It is actually one of the creative elements that completes the release because the person is not just listening but also viewing the “Sleepy Fields.”
Honestly, no matter where in the world these “Sleepy Fields” exist, I could seriously use a one-way ticket to said destination pronto! Regardless of whether it exists in real life or in the structural framework of a dream world, it’s obviously a place of profound natural beauty and tranquility that would do wonders for the soul of anyone brave and lucky enough to experience it. Powers of the Monk have hit another home run here by catching lightning in a bottle and proving once again that they are simply superstars in their realm of creation. I am already counting down the days until opportunity comes around for me to be a part of another collaborative project that continues to shine so brightly in that musical world.
