American Martin Lloyd Howard is more than just a guitarist, as he is a six-string architect whose talents have been honed in the crucible of classical music training. And it is with this background and a new song, “Selene,” which dropped on the winter solstice of December 31st, that Martin is once again ready to move our souls with his music, just as we were with his hauntingly beautiful ‘Unanswered’ before.
The piece begins with a melody like a fading sunset, so soft and warm it might just melt the world away, leaving only the music. This intro feels like a sanctuary, and it will get you excited about the rest of this breathtaking piece.
When it comes to the theme, the song was depicted from the influence of a moonscape that Howard’s wife had painted and named after the Greek goddess of the moon. The song is an embodiment of the silver light that shines through the scudding clouds. Howard doesn’t simply play the guitar; he paints the sky, and let me tell you, he hits every brushstroke, every strum, and every note exactly right.
Martin Howard, the mind behind ‘Unanswered’ and a regular collaborator with none other than Kent himself, Mark Johnson, has come out with a ‘gem’ titled ‘Selene.’ Though known for his extraordinary work with the electric and slide guitars, this one is done on his fifty-year-old, lovingly crafted acoustic. It begins with the warmth of a sunset, dispelling every concern you may have, to finally fix your attention on the heavens. Titled after the Goddess of the Moon, inspired by his wife’s works of art, ‘Selene’ is a storm-tossed sky realized in sound, and trust me, not a note of its pale, bright illumination has been overlooked.
