Step into their world and say hello to your new addiction: Weekday Social. This new alt-rock duo is making some serious noise, and it comes straight out of the 2023 collaboration between Louise and Gavin, Ivan keeping the rhythm till later. Their latest release, ‘Five Years or So’ (out on the 5th of July), is a textbook example of catchy melodies. Break it down with me.
First impressions mean the world, and Weekday Social gets theirs exactly right. ‘Five Years or So’ opens with a dreamy hook on the guitar, which is quickly supplanted by some of the best vocal performance I have heard thus far this year. It is clean, it is flawless, and it is certainly entrancing. It only takes a few seconds to recognize that this is a winning track, and the evidence is right in the opening notes.
Let’s face facts, the mid-twenties suck. Weekday Social isn’t afraid to admit this. ‘Five Years or So’ is a real reflection on the conflict within the soul regarding wanting more but somehow feeling like they’re standing still in the same spot. They take on the ‘quarter life crisis’ head on, throwing out the feelings of solitude in the single life with the twisted emotions associated with relationship expectations. What better explanation can be put upon the musical representation for when a person is trying to find a direction but can’t find the path?. This song!
The band has the Jimmy Eat World swagger and the Brand New/ American Football quality of being a raw, emo band on record. They excel in big guitars and even bigger hearts. ‘Five Years or So,’ recorded in the heart of Muswell Hill, is a phenomenal release where they strike the perfect chord on rawness while maintaining the high production quality. It’s a credit to Andrew JC that he has created a product that feels earthy while being musically rich. The most technical component of the song is where the crescendo takes place. They seem to transition from a poignant reflection to an infectious chorus that feels like a classic instantly. They build up into a monumental finale. Their existence is still only two years old.
One thing is for certain: it is easy to put out a hit or a catchy song, but putting out a song that sticks is something else altogether. Weekday Social aimed to make songs that have enough bite to resonate with everyday people, and they have hit the bullseye right on target. The fact that they can put out a song like ‘Five Years or So’ that is this full of life five months after its release is already a testament to their skill for me. The fact that this song will now be part of my daily playlist is already a guarantee: Weekday Social is the real thing, and the music scene is all the better for them being there!
