On today’s docket of events, we’re red carpeting the return of Zachary Mason, a man who, quite frankly, is physically unable to miss the mark. Whether he’s tugging at our heartstrings with tunes like “Fathers” and “Sweet Girl,” or blasting us off into space with his wonderfully chaotic “The Funky Martians” and stellar EP 5…4…3…2…1., we’ve arrived at a point where Mason’s catalog of work isn’t just a playlist, but a permanent settlement. And fresh from his January 30th release, he’s managed to gift the world a new obsession with the fantastic tune “Sweetheart,” and quite frankly, it’s just the type of high-quality work we’ve come to expect from the fellow. So fasten your seatbelts, folks, as I’m about to take you through why this song should be the only thing occupying the space of your brain.
The track begins with an electric guitar riff that is so infectious, it practically necessitates a signed waiver form to participate; it doesn’t exactly “play,” per se, so much as hypnotize, before one even has time to consider carriendo una pantalla debajo de el textopinwhile relenting to its gravitational pull. As one is beginning to derive considerable satisfaction from this mesmerizing rhythm-induced haze, Mason takes to the mic, and “blown away” is actually only a faintly adequate description of his level of effortless prowess here.
Where the overall subject matter of the song is concerned, there is no denying that Mason is once again dipping his toes into the beautifully comfortable waters of the human heart, this time delving into the thrilling sensation of being, or having, that one special “Sweetheart.” It’s a masterclass in aural bliss, blending those generic tales of romance and the kind of “pinch me” moments that, again, we’d more than normally associate with romantic comedies. It’s as unapologetically adorable and as genuinely sweet as it takes on the aura of making you sport a wide, unintentional grin before the first chorus of the song is even over.
The musical side of things is represented in “Sweetheart,” which is a high-octane rock anthem with sophisticated 80s overtones that makes a seamless move from deceptive soothing rhythms to a crunching, hard-hitting sound with serious muscle. The theme of the song is showcased with the technical side of the piece. It appears that Mason has managed to acquire a literal rhythm section powerhouse with John Thomasson, who is best known within the Little Big Town touring circuit with Emmy/A Grammy awards under his belt, taking care of the bass end of the equation. Add to that Nate Barnes of the highly respected Rose Hill Drive handling the drums, and it’s clear that this is an exploration of romance that makes the proper impact with stadium-style classic sensibilities.
This is more than just a song. It is a display of affection and the breathtaking wonder of love and connections. Mason has proved to me time and again that he didn’t come to play. This song is the perfect segue into the month of love and I’m excited that Valentine’s Day came early. I’m officially sat and I cannot wait to collaborate with him again!
