Greetings to all my lovely readers and music lovers, let’s welcome The Cornelius Eady Trio. The Cornelius Eady Trio, based in New York City, features Cornelius Eady on vocals, Charlie Rauh on electric and acoustic guitars, electric bass, and percussion, and Lisa Liu on electric and acoustic guitars and keyboards. These experienced musicians, all former members of the band Rough Magic, have come together to produce a powerful and soul-stirring sound that captivates audiences with their distinctive blend of folk, folk rock, blues, funk, and poetic influences. On 26th May, they released a seven-song EP called “Misery Tree”. Let’s discuss it
The first song is called “Zombies”. The song opens with a very nice percussion that is very catchy. In the song, zombies seem to have overrun a particular place. The character is warning people in the vicinity to stay out of the zombie’s way. Metaphorically, the zombies can be referred to as anything else, especially as a person in power or a person with great power. The band seems like they are having fun making this song and because of this, we have fun too. This song is a very fun and exciting way to open the EP
Next up is “Quicksand”. The song starts with very nice bass sounds. The vocal performance is very interesting as the song talks about, a character who is admiring that everything around him or her is disappearing (“the things we knew and loved before are all sinking in the quicksand”). The song talks about the inevitability of change. The song was exciting and foot-tapping. This song is another hit on the EP
“Parts unknown” is the title of the next song. The mouth percussion and bass make another wonderful intro for the song. This song is a packed one when it comes to themes. It touches on police brutality, poetry, sickness, and misery. The song is as usual, perfect, with banging instrumentation and perfect instrumentation.
The fourth song is titled “Shuck and Jive”. This song opens with a dreamy guitar melody which is a nice change in the EP. This song makes a funny connection between taking a lovely lady for a ride and how a fool and money are soon parted. The guitar melody and the vocal performance are effortlessly stunning. This song was fantastic
“Razor blade” is what the next song is called. This song has such a groovy bass melody that is very exciting. The song talks about how certain things cannot be changed in life. It’s best to keep moving till you can’t anymore. The mouth percussion makes a comeback and the bass is so beautiful
Next up is a song called “Some Other Day”. This song opens with such a beautiful and hopeful guitar melody that will bring a smile to your face like it did to me. This song encourages us to sometimes postpone some things so we are not overwhelmed and burdened in our lives. This is something we don’t hear often and we appreciate the band for sharing it
The last song on the bill is “The Dance Band on the Titanic”. The song opens like a sea shanty which is very interesting. This song is about a character who has accepted his fate that he’s going to die. This song reminded me of that one scene in the titanic movie where the band was playing on the sinking ship. They knew they were going to die and decided to go out guns blazing. This song is amazing and ties up this beautiful EP
“The Misery Tree” is a moving and timely response to today’s volatile political climate. Through tracks like “Quicksand,” “Zombie,” and “Shuck N Jive,” the band provides a compelling mix of thought-provoking lyrics and exceptional musicianship. This EP, which was recorded, mixed, and mastered remotely, demonstrates the trio’s ability to flawlessly merge their respective abilities into a unified and impactful musical experience that has a profound resonance with listeners.
