“HOLEY SHOES”: THE MASTERPIECE OF A MODERN MUSICAL ROYALTY

It would be an understatement to refer to Richard Green as a fan favorite. Watching him grow up as an artist is akin to observing the creation of history itself. This is because the man hailing from the romantic air of Italy has been living, breathing, and creating in the eclectic atmosphere of London, where he has managed to revolutionize the entire music scene in a few years. He is an artist who isn’t just listened to but longingly anticipated, because the genius of his brain leaves us hanging on the edge of our seats, waiting to see what he does next. If you have walked this path with us, then you know that Richard Green owns us completely because he has bestowed us with a treasure trove of absolute masterpieces that soundtrack our lives permanently. Thanks to anthems such as “Sea Of Memories,” “Just Different,” “Ending Up In A Wrong Way” and the heart wrenchingly beautiful “Sad But Beautiful”, he has found his rightful place in our hearts, minds and rotation playlists forever. However, he doesn’t just write catchy tunes. He has an uncanny ability to capture and express our human souls in its purest form through his music. And as usual, the great artist comes to us once again armed with his brilliant new single “Holey Shoes,” released on December 10th, and if you thought you knew what perfection sounded like, think again.

The song kicks off with a flashy burst of synthy pop ambiance, vivid and movie-like, hovering in the air just ahead of the pulsing, catchy beat which propels the whole thing along. From the get-go, a stream of well-chosen instruments like guitar sounds, floods into the mix, taking the introduction from a small scene to a huge one that sets your heart on fire.

However, beneath the glossy facade of production is a harshly honest concept that acts as an achingly poignant metaphor for poverty and homelessness, conditions that Green had first-hand experience of during the time he spent experiencing the economic disparities of London. And here lies the beauty of the title: what do you do when you can no longer afford a new pair of shoes? Well, you continue to lace up the only pair you have, day in, day out, year after year. As the rough pavement takes its toll, the soles become thinner and thinner until one day something happens: holes appear on the soles of the shoes. It is a stunning image of survival, where the simple piece of clothing becomes the symbol of resilience and quiet dignity of those who are overlooked by the rest of the world.

In the context of the making of “Holey Shoes,” one could say that the track represents a lesson in genre-defying sorcery. Put together with great care during a year-and-a-half period in Green’s very own studio, “Holey Shoes” is an amazing juxtaposition of old-world charm and cutting-edge elements, successfully combining the rawness of funk, indie and rock music with the electronic production. The track is marked by the undeniably recognizable Red Hot Chili Peppers’ DNA of the Blood Sugar Sex Magik era, swampy and groovy, while taking the sound to the future at the same time. However, at the very core of all this auditory architecture lies a breathtaking guitar solo that Richard Green rightly calls one of the greatest things he ever did. Nevertheless, the point that makes the track not only sound amazing but become something more is its heart that beats under the surface. Despite the captivating bass lines and the hooks that make you stick to the music, there is an important and urgent social message behind the track. Namely, the song is meant to be a reminder that we should be grateful for what we have and also an incentive to never ignore the people who have less luck and have to survive rather than live each day. Indeed, it is very rare for a song to make you dance while feeling heartbroken and opening your mind to something new. But Richard Green manages to do it perfectly and effortlessly.

Unlike other artists who simply use lyrics to send out their message, some visionaries, such as Richard Green, have an amazing understanding of how to translate their story into visual language, and that way ensure that their artwork leaves an impression even after the last note of music stops playing. The cover art for “Holey Shoes” is a great example of how one should be able to convey a conceptual idea through images. Indeed, that single footprint left in dust is a great start to an entire album; the image immediately evokes feelings associated with the hardships of life and poverty, as well as the continuous pavement-pounding that the song talks about. It is a wonderful piece of creative direction which does not necessarily pass by the eyes and reaches the heart; thanks to it, we will always have an impression. Even after those funk grooves of the music and the amazing guitar solo fade away from our memories, we will remember that wonderful human story which we have seen.

Apart from its contagious rhythms and brilliant guitar riffs, “Holey Shoes” has a powerful social message, encouraging people to be grateful for their luck and never disregard others who struggle through life merely to survive but do not really live. Wow! Mr. Green, you definitely have gone all out with this one. Could you ever think of a song that despite having been pared down to bare minimum conveys so much emotion that you know everything about what happens in the story before you process even a word? This clearly shows that the artist is at the height of his creativity. Sitting here in utter awe, I know with full awareness that I find myself under the spell of music royalty in action. I pay my respects to you, Richard Green, but as the reverberations of this wonderful piece gradually dissolve into London dusk, one burning question still remains on my lips: where to now?
