It is now time to refocus our attention on DownTown Mystic, the fast-and-loose persona of Robert Allen, an American rock musician. He is a man who takes pride in his art and adheres to the “old school” approach to creating music to such an extent that it almost reaches the point of brilliance. Coming off the success of “Mystic Highway”, along with the hit song “Hard Enough”, he makes a triumphant return. The EP is an epic collaboration of two icons of the music industry, the “Mighty” Max Weinberg and the iconic Garry Tallent. The three have collaborated to present an EP entitled “On E Street (Remix)” that was released on April 3rd. The album presents a rare combination of music icons with the promise of toughness, funk, and veteran soul. Let’s now introduce you to the unique sound of the EP.
Track number one on the album is “Way To Know (Remix)”. The song features Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent. From the very beginning, it introduces its listeners to the sounds of a typical guitar riff of a classic rock’n’roll song, which is soon followed by a fast drum beat, giving this track an air of authority and decisiveness. The theme of the track is related to the inner conflict between intuition and rational thoughts, and the “way to know” is not determined by logical facts, but rather by that gut feeling that emerges when everything seems to be falling apart within a romantic relationship. The character in the song admits that he’s in a mess but, he maintains the fact that, he needs to find a way to understand and make sure of what happened in his life or in a relationship The style of the track can be described as liberating since it allows people to realize their feelings towards someone else. Musically, the singer sounds gravelly and soulful, while the bassline provided by Gary Tallent fits this song perfectly.
In “And You Know Why (Remix)”, the first few seconds of the song open with a vibrant, twinkling tambourine followed by a sharp strike of a snare drum, which pushes the tempo. This song also features Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent. The underlying theme explores the theme of accountability and the tacit agreement that comes with being through the struggle with someone. It talks about that particular moment where words are not enough to explain everything since there are so many things behind those two persons, “and you know why” becomes the point at which you both concede but at the same time. The character in the song talks about the time when you know in your gut that it’s time to leave a relationship and move on with your life. It’s not an easy decision but, it’s a necessary one. In terms of music instruments, the composition utilizes jangling acoustic guitar chords and powerful electric lead guitar. With its lyrics, the song becomes intense while the vocalist seems to be shouting in an effort to emphasize the defiance felt when standing firm in an argument you’ve won in your own mind.
The intro of “Hard Enough (Remix)”features a massive, resonating bassline that seems to vibrate in one’s very being and is then followed up by a sliding, bluesy guitar riff. This song features Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent. In this song, we are told about this wild woman who will leave you in a tizzy. She’s fun and interesting but, there’s a catch, turns out it’s hard to love her or keep up with her because of her nature and warns us of how dizzying it is be with her and the risk of potential heartbreak with this woman. The musicality is highly impressive in terms of how “massive” everything sounds, starting from Max Weinberg’s drum work and the use of crashes to accentuate certain parts of the song. The singing is tired but strong – it perfectly reflects the “hardness” implied in its title.
Looking into history, “Sometimes Wrong (1985)”begins with an absolutely crisp drum and guitar riff full of choruses that has the hallmark sound of 80s rock, with the addition of a simple Four-on-the-floor beat. This song also features the great Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent. In general, the song tells us about a character who is in a state of shock and heartbreak. The lyrics tell us that he feels like his heart is tearing into two. Musically, it seems a bit brighter compared to the remixed versions since the bass part is slightly more playful here. Vocally, the track sounds very smooth and young, as it is performed quite differently from the later renditions.
“And You Know Why (TV Mix)” takes the energy in another direction, by removing some of the atmosphere of the remix and opening the song up with a loud and very clear guitar strumming and drums that have been dried out. The song features Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent. The stripping away of the layers only makes the theme of shared experience and silent communication all the more intimate, creating an atmosphere where it feels like the music is being soaked into our skin and mind. Here, the musicality comes from the space between the notes, where the articulate strumming of Gary Tallent on his strings can be clearly heard. It becomes much easier to hear the rawness of the vocals due to the lack of added production.
Finally, “Way To Know (TV Mix)” ends the EP, starting off with a bright and acoustically rich introduction where the rhythmic nature of the guitar is emphasized until the drums kick in. Here, the song sound perfect for a theme song. This song also features artists Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent. The musicianship in the tune is bright and technically perfect – one can feel the synergy of the trio on the musical level. This mix seems “live,” like a presence in the recording booth together with the artists. The vocals remain strong and powerful, adding the finishing touches to the EP and leaving the audience in a thoughtfully peaceful state, pleased with the work of three professional musicians.
The “On E Street” EP is one of those few occasions in the world of rock when two titans of the genre, “Mighty” Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent, join forces again as a mighty rhythm section in support of another artist, apart from Bruce Springsteen, to make an amazing EP. For collectors and fans of the music of these talented artists, the release of the EP comes as a blessing after the success of the “Hard Enough (Remix)” single, which sets the stage for the EP quite perfectly. The highlight of the EP is the opening song “Way To Know”, The song has been beautifully crafted by the E Street members, who have put together a soulful track that captures the essence of the modern world in a beautiful manner. As someone who has been a fan of these artists since a long time, I can confidently claim that there is no denying their skill as musicians. From the very first note of the song, you can feel the music moving you to the rhythm of its own tune. It’s an album that makes you move and groove with the beats of each song.
