NEON NOSTALGIA AND MODERN MASCULINITY: RHYS HURD’S SONIC REBIRTH IN “WHO THE HELL AM I?”

No Comments Review

Moving forward now, today we are going to be taking a closer look at Rhys Hurd, who is not only a musician but also a producer. He has managed to earn a name for himself quite quickly as one of the most energetic live musicians around in the South West. There is something about his style that forces you to give your undivided attention. On April 8th, Rhys dropped a new single entitled ‘Who The Hell Am I?’. It sounds like an interesting ride is about to begin so let’s dive right in!

As soon as this track plays, there is an unmistakable injection of retro futurism that instantly takes me back to a neon-soaked video game from the 80s,, combined with the rebelliousness of vintage punk shows. There is a raw quality to the opening bars, pulling the listener into their essence, making sure that they understand how this track was made. This is the type of intro that immediately draws the listener in, piquing their interest to discover everything there is to know about this particular song. There is no way anyone would be able to resist being drawn into the same vortex after hitting play.

Thematically speaking, the track becomes a mirror that reflects the difficulties and complexity of being a modern-day male. The singer describes the oppressive weight of social norms and the silent sufferings of people trying to meet all those expectations. At the same time, the song reflects the disturbing presence of twisted personalities among the male representatives of today’s generation, who can proudly call themselves influencers, using the Internet as a platform for their pernicious deeds. Undoubtedly, the digital network has become an additional tool for spreading poison, but at the same time, such individuals had been manipulating people throughout history. They use this opportunity and perform on an updated stage, attracting both radical and polarizing followers of their destructive influence and female supporters. However, in spite of the description of the dark side of modern society, the author remains loyal to himself and his beliefs. Thus, he leaves with a message of self-respect. Namely, in case someone tries to manipulate him and spoil his character, he will simply say farewell to such a person and shut the door on his face.

The brilliance of Rhys’s craft is an explosive mixture of Rock, Pop, and Synthwave, resulting in a majestic Rock ‘n’ Roll anthem. When you listen to his music, it’s like stepping into a movie scene where you find yourself at the heart of a classic arcade or in the middle of an epic 80s TV show. The iconic image associated with Rhys Hurd is that of the color yellow. This is because his music radiates a vibrant and powerful sense of optimism that comes through with each note played. With this album, Rhys has taken the musical structure that he established in his hit song from 2025, “Teach Me How To Love.” By incorporating drum machines and experimenting with synthesizers, Rhys has refined his musical production style. This is not just a technically challenging piece of music; it is a song that takes us to new artistic territory and does not forget about the Rhys Hurd soul that we all love.

Rhys Hurd comes back into the limelight triumphantly in the year 2026 with his single called “Who the hell am I?”. The song heralds the arrival of a promising new era and is heavily influenced by Synthwave music and also from retro video game music scores. As such, it takes the listener right into the midst of a 1980s video arcade environment. This is an incredibly catchy song, brimming with positive vibes.  As far as I am concerned, this single was quite a discovery for me—an essential dose of pure nostalgia. Although none of us can claim to have lived the eighties first-hand, there is something mesmerizing and even addicting about the era’s aesthetics, which Rhys manages to nail perfectly. But what makes this work special is the way it combines the classic, nostalgic atmosphere with the urgency of a contemporary message, making it a truly great work of art. And all of this makes us curious and eager to see what else Rhys will create. Congrats on an outstanding release; we are listening and you have gotten our attention now!
