“NOT MY AMERICA”: OPCRITICAL’S SONIC RECKONING WITH THE NATIONAL SOUL

No Comments Review

Unlike other artists who emerged on the scene towards the beginning of 2026, screaming for attention and the glaring light of the artificial spotlight, OpCritical appeared as an essential acoustic stronghold. This group is not only a collective powerhouse but also a powerful defense of the fundamental pillars of a functional society. There is a special quality of almost sacrificial selflessness that runs deep in the essence of this group, and it is in their philosophy that each individual’s ego is always sacrificed in favor of the message. The singles “Doing Fine” and “USA” have proven to be nothing short of a haunting experience that has stayed with me in the form of persistent echoes that have made me crave what comes next from them. Apparently, the universe must have heard my thoughts because, on April 10th, the duo provided us with their latest masterpiece called “Not My America.” But this single is no simple release; it is an extensive sonic mission from the artists. It is finally time we dive into the depths of its complexity.

The track starts with the crisp snap of the studio count-in, capturing pure and unfiltered anticipation by tearing down any wall existing between the listeners and the band members. It is the sound of the band tuning in to one single frequency, thus preparing the listeners for the significance of what follows. As soon as the instruments hit, they engulf you with a forceful energy that is impossible to resist; the opening bars are so mesmerizing and so carefully crafted that you are already hooked with your very first beat. This is truly a remarkable way of grabbing attention; it is impossible not to want to know more about the story that is about to be told.

“Not My America” is a song about awakening, and its lyrics reflect the urgency of such an awakening amidst a society that is becoming increasingly divided and uncivil. The message conveyed by OpCritical reveals a truth that reflects the nature of our society, as well as those who are expected to guide us morally; however, they often degenerate into the basest, most degrading elements of humanity. “Not My America” is an indictment of the cruel and crude reality of life that has been accepted far too easily within our society. This theme is perfectly illustrated through the visual counterpart of the song, which cleverly incorporates the aesthetics of retro gaming. Utilizing the high-speed adrenaline of the iconic Road Rash game, the band creates an absolutely accurate and disturbing analogy of today’s political climate. Just like players in Road Rash who employ every means necessary – chains, clubs, and forceful impact – to force opponents off their bicycles, political debate has become nothing but a race without rules and boundaries. Winning is everything here, and there is no room left for morality or humanity. It is quite an intriguing connection between retro nostalgia and contemporary criticism – while the pixels create a perfect illusion of a game, in reality, it refers to the toxic and poisonous substance that has permeated today’s society. In every powerful chord of the song, OpCritical brings listeners back to the harsh reality of a merciless world.

The creation of “Not My America” is indeed a battle of sound, expertly utilizing tension and texture to reflect how discourse in modern times has used our diversity to cause divisions instead of bringing people together. Hidden beneath the relentless beats of the music itself lie the lyrics that slice through like a scalpel, using the traditional literary technique of anaphora to place the audience right in the middle of the fray. The repetition of each opening phrase by declaring, “I was raised to be proud,” sets a tone of righteousness and pride of heritage until it is immediately shattered by describing today’s actions as the complete opposite. This stark contrast between our past and present, between what should have been and what is, cuts like a knife.

The band has created a corresponding piece that captures the tension associated with the typical plot of any Hollywood thriller. In terms of the visuals, they are characterized by the dryness of the arid desert landscape, which represents a setting against which the impending apocalypse is depicted. Through a series of breathtaking action scenes and explosive scenes that resemble the dynamics of contemporary society, the video illustrates the majestic yet doomed nature of the American dream. In particular, it conveys a feeling of epic proportions coupled with a claustrophobic mood until the very end when the vehicle plunges into the abyss. The symbiosis between sound and image here is quite evident. The constant beat of the hard rock drives this whole sequence along. It drives it forward with an intensity that shows no sign of abating at all. And finally, when the guitars take off and start screaming into the forefront, they do not simply complement what we see on screen; they are the sound of a nation going to pieces. This sequence is an example of how much tension there is in sound, especially when you have the right music for it. It creates a sense of chaos with the music of the guitars mirroring what we see happening on the screen.

Indeed, OpCritical has managed yet another time to show that they do not simply make music; they build bridges and create the architecture for the essential revival of culture. “Not My America” is a powerful example of a song that reflects back the harsh reality of our society today, while at the same time bringing up the beautiful aspects of its potential. As a person who has been listening to the music of OpCritical since their inception, I consider it an extremely valuable opportunity to see people with such commitment to looking within. Thus, the band turned into a kind of commentator that brings us the truth we need through music. Through their meticulous depiction of our fall, OpCritical has done us all a great service, paving the way for us to examine our fallen state so that perhaps, just perhaps, we may finally be able to start the process of reconstruction. No doubt, their next endeavor will be even grander still, for they have already proved themselves experts at criticism, and I can almost see them preparing themselves to show us the view from the other side of the cliff’s edge. For this is surely the soundtrack to our undoing, but now I cannot wait to hear their score for our resurgence. Whichever way they go, one thing is sure: they have succeeded in becoming our generation’s absolute and necessary conscience.
