The electronic waves are buzzing with vibrant energy as we once again embrace the most brilliant of our blog’s superstars, Stephen H. Cumberbatch – the great C’batch. It’s a huge understatement to label him as simply an artist, for this man is more than just a part of the music that we have become, but a key component of our very musical identity. In the sacred sanctum of Stevette Music, Inc., C’batch continues to hone his craft in order to set an example on how to commit your life entirely to the quest of perfection. Even now, we are all still mesmerized by the spiritual grandeur of “Song for God,” still undone by the profound pain of “Trapped (I’m Doing Fine),” and still drawn back again and again to the detailed, multi-layered terrain of “Next Time (I Won’t Be Falling)” and the vast, genre-bending world of C’Batch “The Vault 2 (Soul/RNB/Pop/Rock/Reggae)”. But even as we became comfortable with the brilliance of these earlier works, he has once again stunned us with the release of his newest album: “The Vault 3 – Club / Dance / R&b-Soul / Funk / Pop / Techno / Etc”. This is not a new album but an event, a dazzling work from a true master at the top of his game. It is time to come out into the light and analyze these twenty tracks.
Leading off at number one is “Breaking My Heart,” which features a distinctive single synthetic bell sound that lingers in the air like an unanswered question until a sudden programmed snare cut pierces the air and signals the transition to overdrive mode. A true lesson in urgent control, this song looks at the vulnerability of a heart that is tough and fragile all at once. The character in the song has seemingly fallen in love with a known man-eater. He knew that she was a heartbreaker but he couldn’t resist her and now, he has paid the price for his vulnerability. The vocals are breathy and perfectly enunciated, floating over an intricate percussion line that lets you feel the pain of a dying love.
Next is “Found What’s Right for Me” the track is characterized by the soft, sensory experience of the touch of fingers moving across nylon guitar strings, ethereal mouth percussion, evoking the idea of intimacy and stasis. The song is a contemplative journey through one’s discovery of oneself, lyrically describing finding one’s place and being content after years of turmoil and searching. The song can also be a song that represents a character who has went through a bad breakup. She grieved, reclaimed her autonomy and can now move around with her head held high. However you understand this song, it is important to know that the song represents the resiliency of the human spirit
and the unbreakable nature of the human spirit. The track has a sparse and acoustic musicality that allows the listener to pay attention to the vocal intonation, which sounds casual and unpolished, bringing the listener closer to the real story of the artist’s development.
“The Club Song” starts with the distinctive, muffled sound of a bass drum bleeding through a concrete wall, rising slowly until the entire room is filled with its rhythmic force. It is an ode to the haven of the dance floor, where the idea of losing oneself among the mass of people is explored. The song’s music is non-stop, with a repetitive pattern of interwoven bass and hi-hats that produce a trance-like effect.
Too Hot To Handle kicks off with a sharply distorted guitar riff and is immediately backed by a funky, retro 80s syncopated rhythm section. The idea behind this song is the examination of a dangerous, attractive kind of desire which threatens to engulf the main character entirely. The character in the song admits that this person he has fallen for is too hot for him. It might be low self esteem talking but, this character feels undeserving of this bombshell’s attention or love. The vocals in the song are forceful and fun, focusing on rhythmic rather than melodic delivery of the words
“Love’s Mystique (the mystery of your smile)” starts off with a soft mouth percussion, an airy sound texture of ethereal pads, giving the song an ethereal, almost dream-like feel before bringing us back down to earth with a pulsating kick drum. It takes a closer look at the mysterious nature of attraction and the mysteries that even our lovers hold. The character in the song is trying hard to find out why she’s so attracted to this person she’s fallen for, you know, the secret to their charisma or beauty. The musical arrangement is rich in texture and uses the subtle, shifting melody lines of the synths to reflect the mysterious lyrics.
“I Just Wanna Love You Now” starts off with a soft and rhythmic plucking sound coming from an electric guitar that is clean. This feels like a fresh dawn after having spent the whole night out. The lyrics express a call for being present, an earnest effort to anchor the relationship in the present rather than in the uncertain future. The persona in the song is asking his lover for her full attention because sometimes, intimacy or connection isn’t just about sex. It’s about letting your partner know that you’re present in the moment so that, you two can connect more deeply. This song is definitely a song you can put on to set the mood for you and your lover’s sexy time. The voice performance is soulful and stripped of any unnecessary effects, making it very sultry and sexy.
“I Am The Right Guy” starts with a confident, booming brass-synth hit that commands the room, immediately setting a tone of self-assuredness. It’s a direct address, an assertive claim of loyalty and worth in a world of fickle connections. The character in the song is trying to sell himself to the woman of his dreams and letting her know that he’s going to be good to her. Love her, listen attentively and pay attention to her needs. The musicality is bold and rhythmic, utilizing a heavy funk-inspired bassline that keeps the listener locked in a groove while the vocals project a sense of unwavering stability and confidence
“On To You” begins with an effect that spins into place through reverse taping to produce dizzying visuals that lead up to a steady beat suitable that’s captivating. The theme is about a character who is letting the woman he’s interested in know that he doesn’t want just a fling. He wants it all, the big wedding, the coup de sac area and the white picket fences. There’s nothing more attractive than a guy to envisions a future with you and isn’t afraid to let you know that he’s in it for the long haul. The music is cool and contemporary, with the use of synths that flicker in and out of place.
Next is “Love Give Me a Sign (Velvet Switchblade) 2”, that starts with the gentle, metal sound of a synth chime, which sets up a fragile balance, but then is interrupted by an urgent bass line. It is about the contradiction between beauty and threat; it uses the image of “velvet switchblade” to describe love that cures and wounds at once. The music composition is complex, with huge orchestral accents making it film-like.
The song “No More Lonely Nights” begins with an upbeat melody, one which sounds so desolate until a rich synth pad overtakes it, changing its tone from one of loneliness into hopefulness. This is a promise of togetherness, and a cleansing of former lone tendencies. The persons who has fallen in love and immediately he knows that there will no be no more lonely nights for both of them, now that they’ve found each other. The song is a sign that we need human connection and this beautiful story is proof of it It is sung from the heart, with a vocal delivery that is sincere and passionate, backed by music building into an anthem.
The song “Hit Me With Your Love” begins with an explosion of drums which seem to imitate the sound of a heartbeat when you’re pumped up on adrenaline. The motif of the song is all about a wild invitation for a bond; it is a “hit” of love which is a cure for routine life. The song describes love like a drug and I don’t blame him. Rapper, J Cole famously said “Love is like the a drug, like the strongest stuff ever, fuck it I’m over”. Unlike J Cole, this character is willing and happy to be high on love. The music is rapid and complex rhythmically, while the vocal performance is sharp and witty.
“Let Me School You (Vocal Version)”enters with a crisp, dry drum loop and a subtle, funky bass guitar groove that establishes a “cool” and collected vibe. The lyrics are an instructional guide to navigating the complexities of romance. The song tells a story of a man who has noticed that his partner is growing distant with each passing day. Instead of wallowing in self pity and overthinking, he lets his partner know that he’s a catch, he’s valuable and that, the grass isn’t in fact greener on the other side. The instrumentation is sparse, allowing the vocal performance, which is rhythmic, smooth, and authoritative, to take center stage as the definitive guide to the album’s themes.
The opening of “Turn It Up-2” is marked by the presence of an overwhelming retro 80s infused low-frequency sub-bass that reverberates through the speakers until a highly energetic hook from a synth joins in to liven up the soundscape. This track is a true dance song that revolves around the idea of sensory overload and the pleasure of being entirely immersed in the music. The song is foot tapping and very captivating.
“Send You My Love”, a song which comes at just the right time as a welcome breeze of fresh air amidst the album’s high-octane energy. The track opens with the sounds of a delicate harp synth arpeggio, accompanied by a light and constant percussion which brings back memories of a contemplative evening. Thematic-wise, “Send You My Love” is the emotional core of the album. The lyrics are filled with a message of love, sending it across any distance, be it physical or emotional, that serves as a reminder of staying connected with the loved one despite all the turmoil and chaos of the world. Long distance relationships are difficult but, this song romanticizes it and shows us how romantic it can be. Musically, the track uses the power of a swelling bass-synth which imitates the waves of the sea tides and the crystal-clear and soaring vocal performance.
“The Funk Groove begins with the classic scratchy sound of an old-fashioned record needle dropping, followed by a deep, heavy bassline that is genuine funk. The theme of the song is the power of the groove itself, the strength of music to bring people together and free them. The arrangement of the song is tight and percussive, emphasizing the interaction between the bass, the drums, and the rhythmic violin and guitar chunks.
“Hold On Now” starts off with a pulsing, alarm-type of synth sound, giving rise to the tension, and this tension is later dissolved through a mellow synth sound. The lyrics tackle the theme of patience, asking for consistency amidst life’s chaos. The music has great contrast between the frantic high hook and the steady mid-tempo drum beats.
The opening of Baba-Loo-Baba-Loo-Aye (Alternate Version) introduces the listener to an unusual vocal sample sounding as if it is in a code and then goes into a world music-style beat with a carefree spirit. This song is about pure delight in the experience of sound and the joy of playing with words without worrying about their actual meaning. The instruments are energetic and colorful.
“I Just Wanna Love You Now (Alternate 3)” opens with the subtle hum of a recording studio and creates an atmosphere of intimacy before bringing back the original tune in the form of a mellow guitar melody. In this version, the concentration is put on the more thoughtful, melancholy side of the original song by stripping it of its shine and revealing the true heart behind the lyrics. The vocal delivery is quiet and intimate, giving the impression of being let into a secret about the real intentions of the artist.
“The Club Song (Alternative Version)” starts off with a bare-bones, kick-driven bass sound, highlighting the “dance” aspect of the original track. By taking away all the other melodic elements, the alternative version takes on a darker and more trance-inducing vibe, concentrating on the instinctive desire to dance. It’s minimalistic yet powerful, with an insistent beat making it an indispensable track for late nights.
“Midnight Serenade(Honeyed Girl)”completes the album with sounds of ambient and very soft and subtle melody far away in the background before settling into a jazzy chord progression played on a keyboard. The motif is that of the sacred privacy one experiences during the late-night hours, which is a love filled with sweetness, grace, and seduction. The instrumentation offers a silky performance which completes the album with an ending of sheer satisfaction rather than any grandiose finale.
There really is something remarkable about the fact that The Vault 3 is able to be both a time capsule and a manifesto at the same time; C’batch managed to accomplish the very difficult task of making “unfinished business” in archiving alive and vibrant, so much that nothing else seems more pressing or interesting from among current chart entries. The artist has shown exceptional mastery by managing to balance the frenzied, neon-lit requirements of club/techno music along with the delicate and whispering vulnerability of ambient soul. It has been a great learning experience watching the growth process of this series. I agree with you entirely that there has definitely been a trend of growth here, in the sense that each successive Vault has been a greater architectural marvel than the one before. He is not only making music but covering the entire gamut of human experience, from the joy of the dance floor to the intimate moment of a late night serenade. It is truly an honor to be witnessing a genius work at the peak of his powers. As with you, I too am on pins and needles, wondering which nooks and crannies of his musical mind he will explore next.
