ANTON DONOVAN REINVENTSHALF-A-CENTURY OF ROCK WITH A DAZZLING, GENRE-DEFYING TAKE ON “NO MORE TEARS”

Born out of the rough and unusual streets of Halifax, Nova Scotia, a place where the enigmatic vibe of the city itself is infused in every single tone he creates, Anton Donovan is a man of vision who resides in Los Angeles and whose creative DNA cannot be confined to any of those pre-fabricated categories the music industry tries to impose. Much before he ever started singing in front of our ears, Anton Donovan had perfected the art of captivating attention through his role as a stage hypnotist and improv comedian. These experiences aren’t just a curious detail of his biography; they are the hidden trick that makes him such an irresistible performer. On July 2nd, he presented us with his latest gem, “No More Tears,” a piece of magic that makes us surrender to its power. It’s time to immerse ourselves in the magic of Anton Donovan’s creation and analyze it.

The song kicks off with an amazing, infectiously groovy, rubbery guitar riff awash with classic funk, and hooks you into a groove that will not let you go until vintage keys appear, like a warm fog, enhancing the mood even further. However, once you think that everything is done, a trumpet solo breaks through the mix with such amazing clarity and power that it creates an instant chill that goes directly down your spine. On paper, it may sound like an overload to pack all this instrumental into the opening of the song; however, under the excellent guidance of Donovan, every single note is placed perfectly and executed with the remarkable finesse and ease that make it a pure masterpiece.

In Anton Donovan’s radical reworking of the quintessential heavy metal classic “No More Tears,” from the 1991 Ozzy Osbourne album of the same name, he strips away the entire track and plants it in an environment that couldn’t be more foreign to it. It is not just any ordinary homage or novelty cover of the classic song; instead, Donovan treats the work like an old master of which he is both an historian and an auteur. His performance strips the song of all its darkly thunderous grandeur, opting to avoid the signature virtuoso guitar work of Zakk Wylde for a lush, cross-genre soundscape that seems less like a cover than a re-discovery of a forgotten musical classic from some parallel universe. In taking the song out of the stifling conventions of heavy metal and into a groovy, late-night playground, Donovan reveals the sort of brazen artistic daring that sets visionary artists apart from mere copycats. This is a breathtaking feat of musical reinvention, proving once again that a true masterpiece of music is indeed timeless; it has the capacity to cast off the shackles of metal and step forth anew with a wholly different emotional heartbeat.

Created amidst the geographic and artistic tension of Los Angeles and Halifax, this masterpiece captures the soul of Ozzy’s composition, looking at it through the eyes of a radically beautiful distortion created by the collaboration between the artist himself and his incredible producer and collaborator, Emerson Dameron. Years before the composition was recorded onto a master tape, Donovan was already completely immersed in the mysterious poetry of the song, its movements, and Osbourne’s ghostly vocals. The last recording is an indication of how well the eccentricity of the artist matches up with the eccentricity of the producer, leading to the creation of an audio anomaly that has nothing whatsoever to do with any other music that can be heard on the radio right now. However, despite its revolutionary nature, what comes across the most clearly in the end is how reverent Donovan is; his ideal hope would be that this masterpiece becomes the means by which people go back to discover the metal classics that inspired it.

That one-of-a-kind artistic vision was perfectly achieved once Donovan started to unite the strictness of his classical education with the decadence of his passionate attraction to dirty Vegas lounge aesthetics, creating something he lovingly refers to as his “weird little Musical Neighbourhood of Make Believe.” Taking inspiration from such theatrical greats as Rodgers and Hammerstein and Bertolt Brecht, as well as dramatic European cabaret of Jacques Brel (through Scott Walker’s brilliant interpretation of it) and witty Oscar Levant, Donovan created a unique sound space that makes critics unable to find any comparisons. From the very first notes till the last, “No More Tears” is pure joy for the ears, featuring bright, technicolor instrumental performance full of life and drama. It is a masterpiece, a perfect remake, and I highly recommend everyone listen to it.
