Hello, music lovers and fellow sound chasers, and welcome to the amazing world of the Norwegian band Project : Beyond from Bergen. As you will have noticed if you have been following the group’s development as intently as I have, there is really something unique about this band. They have the unique power to combine the unrefined soul of rock with the brilliant innovation of pop and indie. One of the most fascinating features of their music-making is their unique skill at creating music which is catchy and accessible, but at the same time surprising and unpredictably brilliant. Each composition is an amazing journey, changing its structure, mood and direction precisely at the point where you feel like you have everything figured out. The group released their wonderful single, “The End,” on September 18th, and you can hear the amazing result right now.
From the first second on, the song grabs your attention with its dark, dramatic, and atmospheric synth riff, instantly giving off an overall sense of film-noir. But right when you find yourself fully entranced by this dark spell, Project : Beyond gives away their characteristic finesse by skillfully adding an absolutely delightful electric guitar riff to the song. Although it is just a few moments, this intro song serves as a great mini-masterpiece that shows just a taste of the sonic greatness to come.
Ultimately, the most profound philosophy that comes through in “The End” is that everything about our lives happens not alone but with the context of what is passing around us. People leave, memories fade away and change occurs constantly around us. However, Project : Beyond manages to approach this philosophy with an incredibly wise and emotional insight into the fact that what has gone before can have such an impact on who we are, how we see things and how much amazing opportunities lie ahead for us as a result. It is the best possible musical embodiment of the philosophical truth that all good things come to an end, or rather that everything that comes into existence must one day end. Rather than dwell on the sadness of that, however, this song presents a profoundly relatable and inspiring invitation to enjoy the beauty of what has been experienced, learn the lessons from it and accept the knowledge as well as the unlearning that comes with it.
In terms of lyrics and philosophy, Project : Beyond are on a completely different wavelength altogether; they seem to have found a way to naturally blend some incredibly deep reflections about identity, change, and human interaction into what they do. In fact, even their name suggests an aspiration; although each of their songs is a masterpiece in itself, it is at the same time a gateway, through which we may see beyond appearances. In their music, they also manage to keep pushing boundaries, without compromising their audience’s access. They boldly make their way through unpredictable structures and changes of mood, without falling into predictability and still hitting the mark with their melodies.
“The End” is undoubtedly a complete success story, a masterpiece made even more perfect because of the pristine instrumentation and phenomenal singing. It is indeed amazing to see artists who take such great pride in what they do that each and every note they make comes from their heart and through their expertise. Project : Beyond is truly a band on another level, and it would be really exciting to know what kind of music they will come up with in the future.
