MUSIC BY JEREMY RETURN OF A MASTERPIECE: INSIDE “SCENES FROM A WELL WORN PATH (SIDE THREE)”

Please join me in formally welcoming the talented musician, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Music By Jeremy from Banbury back to the blog! On the first appearance of his debut album, “Scenes from a Well Worn Path – Side One”, I was immediately taken aback by a truly unique talent. Listening to this man’s music for the very first time wasn’t like hitting “play” on a record, it was like taking a seat in the sunny room opposite an old friend – someone with whom you’ve had a friendship that spanned your entire life and who is finally letting you into the hidden depths of their heart and soul. And when I listened to this debut, I heard the echoes of generations of masterful musicians within each note: the raw and unfiltered honesty of John Lennon, the literate and cinematic songwriting style of Bob Dylan and Randy Newman, and the fearless creativity of David Bowie. At long last, the master is back and ready to blow us all away again. With his new six-track album, Scenes from a Well Worn Path (Side Three), released on October 25th, it becomes clear without a doubt that Jeremy is far from just walking in the footsteps of the greats; he is creating his own legacy. His third installment showcases his incredible talent in new ways through his cutting-edge lyrics and skilled acoustic music while venturing into the world of human connection and social commentary. So without any delay, let’s take a look at each track in this fantastic new work!

The song “No Price On Earth” begins with a solo acoustic guitar, finger-picked, which starts off in a slow pace, accompanied by a low and warm sound of a fretless bass to create an intimate mood before the singer comes in with his vocals. The lyrics talk about the quiet resistance against constant commercialization and productivity measurement. Jeremy portrays peace as a fundamental right of people rather than a commodity or something you earn. He believes that peace does not come with a price and he is against the new craze of measuring time and silence in terms of money. He muses over how no money on earth can buy this experience In terms of singing, the vocal delivery of the song is quite plain and dry with conversational intonation. There is no much instrumentation in the song and the use of instruments is quite natural and organic. The effect it creates is one of being grounded; it helps you take deep breaths and escape the daily grind.

The piece starts with a very upbeat and syncopated strumming on the acoustic guitar combined with a lovely violin melody percussion line that is tap-like in feel. The lyrics for “I Don’t Know” contain a very interesting story. We meet a character who asks himself and his partner how he can make her smile and wonders how he could have hurt his beloved so much that she was in tears. The unbelief and desperation in his voice lets us know that he’s ready to make better choices. The vocal performance in “I Don’t Know” shows more of a playfully humble approach to the vocals. Jeremy uses the line in the title with a lot of feeling and charm, as if he is humbly admitting to his inability to answer. The sliding basslines show the uncertain flow of human thoughts in music.

The song “Economic Possibilities For Our Grandchildren” begins with a rhythmic, somewhat abrasive guitar riff with a rolling bassline that adds an intense forward movement to the music. Named after John Maynard Keynes’ well-known essay written in 1930, the song lyrically contrasts the mid-century promise of utopian economics to the modern concept of endless work and systemic exhaustion, which is inherited through generations. In his performance of the song, Jeremy reflects on how the advancements in technology were supposed to bring us leisure time, while in reality, the progress only increased the list of our responsibilities. Vocal performance brings a satirical and dry tone to the already heavy musical performance of the band, giving a strong contrast to the arrangement. The musicality of the song moves into the more folk-rock direction with acoustic elements and rhythm sections building pressure in the song structure.

“How Much Is Enough” opens with a graceful descent of a guitar arpeggio accompanied by soothing atmospheric sounds, painting a contemplative, almost mournful landscape at the onset of the song. In the lyrical content, Jeremy focuses on the themes of consumerism, ambition, and false fulfillment, making the questions as fundamental as possible – at which point does personal longing give way to social conditioning? He questions the cycle of acquisition of more and more material wealth, status, space, wondering at what point does a person decide that enough is enough, and that he needs no more than that. He wonders if these worldly achievements made them feel happy, in awe of their nature. His vocals are calm and melancholy, yet extremely empathic and understanding, as if he is making a confession rather than trying to impose his will on anyone else. The instrumental track remains spacious enough for everything from vocal intonation to bends on strings to sound clearly.

“Market Square” begins with an exciting, circular acoustic guitar riff and faint ambient sound effects to conjure up the presence of a public space. The lyrical content provides a dynamic, panoramic picture of everyday civic activity by watching street sellers, people commuting, and passer-by to understand how public spaces gather different stories of strangers. Jeremy incorporates minor observations of day-to-day life into the larger narrative of community, transactional relations, and human space. The vocal performance in the song has an observational and melodic character by using minor vocal harmonies to create the effect of the collective voice. As for the music, it is played on acoustic picking and mid-tempo folk rhythm to move the song forward like walking down the main avenue of a city. The impression left after listening to the song creates an association with the connectedness of people in the modern isolated world where the local square becomes the canvas of human history.

Concluding the record is the track known as “The Letter”. It features a gloomy bass intro that is accompanied by an guitar riff that instantly adds the feeling of a dramatic movie soundtrack/ Latin infused melody The main topic is avoidance of emotion and denial of the truth, where the focus is on the burden of an unopened letter, a literal one or the one representing truth, that people cannot face. The lyrics discuss how long the unsaid words stay inside people, and they live longer than pain. Jeremy’s vocal performance is the most powerful on this track, and he delivers the lines with a deep, slow voice that transmits the tension and feeling of the moment. Dynamic changes happen through the use of a well-built combination of the low bass with the reverberating strings. The song leaves the listener sitting alone with his thoughts.

This album is a brilliant lesson in intellectual complexity packaged in sheer musical pleasure. One can look at the remarkable song titled “Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren,” which takes its name from the renowned essay by economist John Maynard Keynes written way back in 1930 and opens up with an iconic quote from Macbeth in order to understand the reason why modern wealth came but got trapped into itself. Another great example of the same is “I Don’t Know,” wherein the artist manages to create a love confession by framing it as an unsuccessful mathematical proof, proving that real love is always illogical.

Listening to this third chapter, there is no denying that Jeremy is not only walking the path of the great legends, but he is creating his own legacy as well. It is truly amazing to experience this epic four chapter story come together, one part at a time, and each and every one of these releases just proves again and again that Music By Jeremy is indeed a force to be reckoned with and he is absolutely about to conquer the world!
