Welcome to WELTSCHMERZ! It is a great joy to explore the album “Refugium,” which is far more than just a release but a sonic refuge. This beautiful four-track instrumental EP will drop on August 28th, and it is a perfect example of the result you get when powerful musical tradition meets deep emotional maturity. The reason why “Refugium” is such a unique album lies in the ability of the artist to turn complicated emotional experiences into pure sound. With a solid musical background in 2000s drum & bass, WΞLTSCHMΞRZ gives this record a strong rhythmic component. However, it is made much softer by the nostalgic sounds of the 90s boom-bap, dusty lo-fi vibe, and jazz-like harmonies. There isn’t a single wasted frequency in “Refugium”, “Missing Out”, “Beyond Noise”, and “Still Life”.
Beginning with the title track, “Refugium”, which opens the EP, does not feature an expected sanctuary-like ambient texture; instead, it introduces a low-frequency piano melody that produces a low-pass-filtered sound. On top of that sounds slightly covered by a light analog tape hiss effect; a clear piano melody suddenly starts to play from the left channel: a four-note arpeggio in a minor mode that is followed by a reverberation tail that resembles the one of a cave. It is the impeccable skill of combining live instrumentation and hip-hop roots of the music that really makes this composition stand out. Organic guitar lines, deep and powerful bass, and elegant piano harmonies blend perfectly with ambient synth soundscapes, complemented by true golden-age soulful scratches. The track creates a wonderful, tranquil, and lo-fi environment, almost a meditative sound atmosphere that is simultaneously intimate and spacious. However, even in such moments of introspection, the track retains its core and the tight, driving beat that unmistakably defines it as a hip-hop composition. This is simply brilliant production, and it comes as no surprise for those who have been following this journey all along and who have already come to admire every single note played. From the listener’s perspective, the track is an incredibly cathartic song to listen to, since it allows one to validate and release their emotions.
Translating the EP’s energy to a dynamic, frenetic frequency, “Missing Out” starts off with a dry and syncopated hi-hat beat that beats quickly while there is an underlying pulsating synth bassline. In an instant, before the beat can even settle down, a sharp, clear snare drum crack slices through the track, triggering a soaring lead synth riff and piano melody that is drenched in echo and glides smoothly above a rhythmic and post-punk-inspired beat. The song manages to convey the bittersweet feeling of loneliness and detachment without the use of any lyrics whatsoever. The emotional theme is conveyed purely via urgency; it is through minor-key chord progressions that express both desire and urgency, signifying the tension within oneself due to the yearning to connect yet remaining paralyzed. The music in this track is the best demonstration of tension and release; motoric drums provide the momentum, while the complex and weeping melodies create the atmosphere of nostalgia, stacking atop sharp and aggressive rhythm patterns and a relentless subterranean bassline. Overall, the effect is extremely relatable and visceral; there is a sense of triumph of isolation.
Moving into darker and more cinematic territory, “Beyond Noise” opens with the sound of a soft piano melody and deep bass line that vibrates in the lower frequencies of the music, interwoven with the sound of atmospheric static from the industrial ambient soundscape. This static sound environment is pierced by an isolated tremolo picking melody that floats for a second in the air before being smashed by a bombastic and marching drum roll and synthesizer drop. WELTSCHMERZ uses this mid-tempo sound design to simulate the feeling of cutting through overwhelming chaos to uncover a core of absolute clarity and peace. Instrumentally, this track represents the peak of the project’s heavy dynamic contrast—pairing dense, distortion-laden synth chugs with shimmering ambient counter-melodies and relentless, thunderous percussion that shifts between driving mid-tempos and airy, half-time breakdowns. The impact on the listener is utterly cleansing and invigorating; it acts as a sonic reset button that flushes out mental fog, leaving you feeling empowered, refreshed, and completely dialed in.
The album ends in a stunning fashion with “Still Life,” an elegiac composition that begins with an evocative solo electric piano melody in which one can sense the organic warm resonance and sustain coming from the piano through the space of the recording room. Another gentle layer of ambient synth pads joins the piano, adding a gentle bass foundation, followed by the slow, heartbeat-like kick drum in the fourth bar to steer the composition towards its resolution. The composition captures the essence of the serene beauty and impermanence of the frozen moment and peaceful resignation to it amidst the constant spinning of life around us. Musically, this song is an example of how restraint can be transformed into greatness. The song starts off with a simple piano tune but soon becomes an epic masterpiece of multiple layers and arrangements incorporating string synth, bass, and percussion that comes to a triumphant emotional culmination and then slowly goes back down to one piano note. This track brings a cathartic conclusion to the EP that leaves the listeners in a state of silent meditation.
Having roots back in the 2000s, this is an artist who has indeed developed himself as an underground DJ, having made a name for himself through his vinyl releases in drum & bass acts such as Duo Infernale and Electrolyte. Today, all these elements form his mature sound, which incorporates the soulful spirit of the 90s hip-hop and jazz-influenced harmony in the lo-fi spirit. The master class he delivers in this EP is absolutely unmissable.
Each and every song requires one’s full focus and attention, effortlessly fusing together amazing and pristine instrumentation where each and every note feels like it was meant to be there, perfectly played and flawlessly crafted. WELTSCHMERZ is an incredibly unique and truly visionary artist who is completely in his own lane. The amount of talent and effort put into this album is a clear testament to the fact that he is working at the absolute pinnacle of his craft.
