Masters of the art, this band blends the raw and intense power of blues rock perfectly with the majestic and sweeping qualities of the big band. On September 10th, they gave us a wonderful gift in the form of the stunningly beautiful new single “Why ?”, a true reflection of their brilliant talent, chemistry, and amazing songwriting skills. Therefore, get ready for an in-depth, poetic analysis of the inner workings and soul of “Why ?”, a song that not only attracts your attention, but definitely makes JFK BLUE one of the absolute top performers of modern blues rock music.
The song opens up with a very enticing and almost otherworldly melody which plays in the background and then gives way to a very commanding electric guitar riff. Below this instrumental arrangement plays a very beautiful and dignified drum beat in combination with the amazing soulful trumpet playing, which gives the song a bit of cinematic class. What makes the song’s intro so incredibly unique is the fact that there is just a great mastery of instrumentation – there are so many layers and different textures involved, but each one of them gets enough breathing space. The song’s mix is done with such restraint and perfection that it is just a pleasure to listen to each and every instrument in its full glory.
The song “Why?” is a powerful expression of the love found and the lost love, a heartfelt portrayal of the pain of remorse and the regret of what might have been. The song describes an authentic, life-changing and painful experience that is relatable to most people. Nothing can be more tragic than having a shared deep and mutual love and passion with someone who returns the same sentiment, yet ends up slipping away from you nonetheless.
This puts you in a state of disbelief, trying desperately to perform an autopsy on a relationship which seemed invincible. The soulful narration in the song is a great embodiment of this very vulnerability, as it captures the journey of a protagonist stuck in the circle of reflections, trying to figure out where things went wrong, where he read the signals incorrectly, and how his love turn into a series of questions.
This composition comes to life through the talent of an extremely gifted and tight band that has worked together for over a decade now, with a lineup that’s been delivering its best performance since 2018. The composition includes Stef Allsebrook as the voice and lead guitarist who leads the song with passion, Stas Melian providing brilliant second lead guitar sounds, Leslie Fleischman on bass providing a deep foundation, Dave Ferguson as the Hammond organist who creates rich sounds on the Hammond organ, electric piano, and synthesizer, Jos Henrit who plays the drums and percussion with finesse, and Omid Amiri and Lottie Beattie playing tenor, alto, and baritone saxophone and back vocals, respectively. Within “Why ?”, this fearsome section converts the agony of lost love and regret into an audio experience full of fire and electricity. The guitar licks are hot and emotional as they fight with the Hammond organ, which is steeped in rhythm and blues. The tenor saxophone and the baritone saxophone soar beautifully through the blues-rock background of the band.
Listening to “Why ?” is like witnessing experienced veterans do what they do best in terms of their creative skills and expertise. Each chord played is loaded with meaning and power; each sound produced by the brass section is a stab right to the heart; each passionate melody sung keeps ringing in one’s ears even after it has faded away. It is vibrant and deeply touching, and you simply cannot take your eyes off it and your ears away from it.
