Nothing can describe the excitement we feel in bringing to you, our loyal readers and great fans of rock music, the only rock musical incarnation, DownTown Mystic, of the famous American rock musician Robert Allen. A purebred musician like no other, Allen never stops honoring the glorious, classic way of composing and producing music. He is not just respectful of the legacy of rock n’ roll; rather, he takes it to the next level by adding an element of soulfulness and honesty that is difficult to find in modern-day musicians.
Coming straight after the success of his album Mystic Highway, hit song “Hard Enough”, and EP On E Street (Remix), which also included the awesome rhythm section of rock legends from E Street Band Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent, DownTown Mystic is back and in full glory. On October 9th, he released his new hit single, “Maybe Love’s A Crime.” Let’s talk more about it
The song starts off with an amazing, lively, and vibrant piano tune with jazz flavors that is filled with elegance and grace. However, it is only after the arrival of the snappy drum beats and the irresistibly charming vocals that the introduction reaches its peak and becomes truly inviting. This one incredible moment makes you realize without any kind of doubt that you are right there in the unforgettable world of DownTown Mystic, which is an audio world where artistry meets pure rock ‘n’ roll soul.
“Maybe Love’s A Crime,” at its heart, ventures right into the electrifyingly dangerous territory of a deep, all-consuming passion and infatuation. “It is so easy to capture that dangerous but exciting and intoxicating rush when love becomes a mystery, questionable and even illicit.” After such a tumultuously enjoyable relationship, DownTown Mystic brings forward an extremely blunt story to his lover and encourages her to accept the mess that has been made in the aftermath and laugh at the notion that a love like that should actually be prohibited. The association of crime, love, and imprisonment makes for a superb and powerful poetic metaphor and, at the same time, it is the reflection of the great emotional impact, intriguing captivity, and, ultimately, scarring experience that a wild passion leaves behind. It is very raw and human, and only someone with the skill of a poet of Robert Allen’s amazing level could use this kind of powerful imagery.
And then there’s the signature sound of DownTown Mystic, which exemplifies the definitive concept of “vintage but contemporary,” right up there with the timelessness of the legends of heartland rock including Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen. In the grand tradition of American rock ‘n’ roll, Robert Allen masterfully blends the storytelling prowess and rich musical content with the warm sun-bleached crunch of classic guitar sounds and the warmth of analog recording technology. This unique and mesmerizing genre not only captures the golden age of music but also makes it contemporary and alive with all the vigor it brings. Musically speaking, the classic harmonies of Buffalo Springfield mixed with the power pop energy of Rockpile make for another classic example of what the true essence of rock ‘n’ roll really means.
Relax, my music lovers and readers, as we pause to delve into something rare and sacred in today’s music scene: intentionality. Not many artists have the foresight to be sure that everything will contribute to the big picture, to make sure that their audiences are fully engaged, and to get their point across clearly. This is what DownTown Mystic does on “Maybe Love’s A Crime” through his brilliant use of the cover art for the track. With the addition of two polished, shining handcuffs with a beautiful rose on top of them, the picture becomes an awe-inspiring poetic symmetry, Love’s, with the steel handcuffs representing the heavy chaos of a crazy relationship, and the flower becoming the symbol of everlasting love. Such impeccable taste, such vision and creativity are something one cannot order or buy; this is the trademark of a real mastermind at work. And there it is – the circle is made, the picture is completed, and the magnificent intentionality of DownTown Mystic reaches its perfect conclusion.
DownTown Mystic has once again left me totally awe-struck. With each and every production, Robert Allen goes even further in pushing his artistic limits, reaching new and astonishingly high levels of creativity that appear almost otherworldly. He has the unique gift to make every time you listen to his music something special, something to remember for life. It is an absolute pleasure to watch his incredible career from the very beginning, and as one of his true fans and admirers, I cannot wait to see what amazing creation he is going to come up with next.
