Born on January 30, 2002, Tyla Laura Seethal is a singer and songwriter from South Africa who goes by her mononym Tyla. She was born and reared in Johannesburg, South Africa, and signed to Epic Records in 2021 following the popularity of her debut track “Getting Late” with Kooldrink at home. After her 2023 single “Water” became a top ten hit in the UK and the first South African soloist song to enter the US Billboard Hot 100 in 55 years, Tyla became well-known worldwide.
EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION
Seethal was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, from a family of Zulu, Indian, and Mauritius ancestry that was Colored She was the head of culture when she graduated from Edenglen High School in 2019.She began by sharing original songs and covers on Instagram and emailing them to several influential people in the music industry. Her first manager then saw what she was doing and set up her initial recording sessions.Prior to deciding to devote herself entirely to her music career, she was pursuing a degree in mining engineering.
With production from Kooldrink, Tyla’s debut single “Getting Late” was released towards the end of 2019 and became a nationwide hit.At the 28th South African Music Awards in 2022, the corresponding music video received a nomination for Music Video of the Year.Then, in a joint venture with Fax Records in the US, she inked a recording deal with Epic Records.The singles “To Last” and “Overdue” were her follow-up releases.
After her single “Been Thinking” was released in 2023, Tyla made her stage debut at the Dolce & Gabbana afterparty at Milan Fashion Week and landed Tyla on the Billboard Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, marking her first-ever chart placing. What Pitchfork’s Heven Haile called a “slick club anthem that channels the seductive pop-R&B hits of mid-2000s Ciara and Rihanna”Afterwards, Tyla travelled with Chris Brown as his opening act around Europe for their Under the Influence Tour.
She released the song “Girl Next Door” in May 2023, starring Ayra Starr, a Nigerian singer.Afterwards, in July 2023, she also made the song “Water” available as the lead single from her impending first extended play.The song rose to the top of the UK Afrobeats Singles Chart and reached the top 10 in New Zealand, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom following the creation of a widely shared dancing challenge on the social media platform TikTok .“Water” debuted at number 67 on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming Tyla the youngest South African to do so and the first in 55 years, since Hugh Masekela’s “Grazing in the Grass” in 1968.
In Sweden, she played the song live on The Bianca Show, and in the US, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.On October 7, 2023, the accompanying music video was published. In just three days, it had 3 million views on YouTube.The song “Girls Need Love” by Summer Walker was then remixed with Tyla included. This version was made available as a part of the latter’s Girls Mix extended play in October 2023.
