Michael Owusu Addo (born July 10, 1985), better known by his stage name Sarkodie, is a Tema-based Ghanaian hip hop recording artist and entrepreneur. At the 2012 BET Awards, he won the Best International Act: Africa category, and he was nominated for the same award at the 2014 BET Awards. e.tv Ghana ranked Sarkodie as the 19th most influential Ghanaian in 2015.

He is regarded as one of the most important proponents of the Azonto dance and genre. Sarkodie is regarded as one of Africa’s most influential hip hop performers. In 2014, MTV Base placed him sixth on its list of the “Hottest African MCs.” He was voted first on Lynx TV’s list of the “Top 10 Ghanaian Rappers of All Time” in 2013. AfricaRanking.com placed him third among the “Top 10 African Rappers of 2015” in 2015. He was named one of the top five hip hop acts on the African continent by The Guardian in 2015.

Sarkodie was born and reared in Tema, Ghana, as the fourth of five children to his mother Maame Aggrey. Sarkodie began rapping when he was a child and continued throughout his studies. Tema Methodist Senior High School was his alma mater. IPMC awarded him a graphic design degree. Sarkodie got his start in the music industry as an underground rapper. He competed in Kasahare Level, a prominent rap competition on Adom FM. He met his former manager Duncan Williams of Duncwills Entertainment through rap fights.

He also met musicians Edem and Castro, who connected him to established record producer Hammer of The Last Two. After hearing Sarkodie’s rap flows, Hammer decided to include him on two songs from the Volta Regime album. Sarkodie recorded his debut album Makye after this exposure. Sarkodie’s first single, “Baby,” starring Mugeez of the R2Bees, was an instant hit and established Sarkodie as a household figure in Ghanaian music. Sarkodie earned a record deal with JM Entertainment after competing against rappers from the popular rap competition Kasahare Level. Makye, his debut album, was released in 2009, with production by Killbeatz and Jayso and guest appearances by Kwaw Kese, J-Town, Sway, and Paedae of R2Bees.

The album was well-received by critics and fans alike. It was unveiled at the Accra Mall, with a follow-up concert staged at Accra’s Holy City Gardens. Sarkodie’s singles “Push” and “Baby” were voted ninth and thirteenth, respectively, on Joy Fm’s Top 50 songs of 2009. “Good Bye,” “One Time For Your Mind,” “You Go Kill Me,” “Living Legend,” and “Onyame Nhyira” were released as lead singles from Sarkodie’s Rapperholic album in 2011. The song “You Go Kill Me,” which features EL, was favourably welcomed in Ghana. Cameo cameos in the video were made by Sulley Muntari, Castro, Deborah Owusu-Bonsu, X.O Senovoe, DJ Mensah, and Funny Face. Sarkodie released his Rapperholic album in 2012, which earned great reviews from critics.

Efya, Chidynma, Mugeez of R2Bees, Obrafour, Jayso, EL, and others make cameos on the album. To promote the record, Sarkodie embarked on a statewide tour. Sarkodie’s first BET nomination and eventual win came from the album Rapperholic. Along with Talib Kweli, Jean Grae, and Ab-Soul, Sarkodie was featured on the BET Hip Hop Awards cypher. On the cypher, he was the only African artist.

Sarkodie released the official remix for his 2011 hit song “You Go Kill Me” on October 30, 2013, which reached number one on numerous Ghanaian charts. Wizkid, Ice Prince, Navio, and EL are among the artists who contributed to the remix. On December 21, 2013, a concert was held to celebrate the release of the Sarkology album on January 2, 2014. The Accra Sports Stadium hosted the event. Fuse ODG, AKA, Davido, Tiwa Savage, Banky W, 2 Face Idibia, Joey B, and Efya, among others, make cameos on the album. Sarkodie released the official remix for “Adonai” after releasing the Sarkology album. The remix was an instant hit in Africa, making the BBC’s Capital Xtra Top 35 Afrobeats Songs list.

In 2014, Sarkodie founded his own record company, Sarkcess Music. He debuted the videos for the “Adonai” remix and “Special Someone,” both of which feature Castro and AKA, as part of the launch. Sarkodie’s singles “Megye Wo Girl,” “Love Rocks,” “Chingum,” and “Whine Fi Me” were also released on the label.
