It is with absolute delight and enthusiasm that we give our warmest welcome to one of our favorites and an innovator of immense proportions: BRYANNA RAIN! Coming from the creative melting pot that is Richmond, Virginia, this gifted and prolific musician is a living testament to the fact that she pushes the limits of popular music by turning sound into nothing less than absolute magic. If you have followed her journey up until now, you surely know what I am talking about when I say that there is no other artist like her on the planet. This year alone saw the release of a stunning 33-track vinyl box set, which was a compilation of her best work to date; namely, EPisodes, Petrichor, and The Arcade Demo Sessions. But Bryanna is not one to sit back and take things for granted. It is today, May 22nd, that she marks an end to another spectacular chapter and kicks off a brand-new era with the launch of her much-anticipated ten-track record, (Digital) Assets. This is truly an album to savor, an exercise in sound, emotion, and avant-pop genius. So put on those earphones, leave behind all preconceived notions, and join us as we journey into its depths, explore its genius, and discover its magical wonders hidden within the “(Digital) Assets” album.
However, unlike other tracks that break the silence with beautiful musical sounds, this song begins with an unpleasant wall of sound that comprises some computerized glitches, broken pieces of spoken words, and noises. This introduction creates an ambiance of chaos and claustrophobia as nothing melodious is heard at first.
It may be said that “Ferretheads” is an excellent and innovative critique of psychological noises, modern distractions, and incessant rushing thoughts in a mind bombarded with digital information. In musical terms, there is the overwhelming fusion of frantic, stuttered electronic rhythms and an insane synthetic line that jumps around unexpectedly in the stereo sound field. The vocals of Bryanna Rain change from a somewhat dispassionate, rhythmic spoken style to staccato vocal sounds that emulate the machine-like quality of the production. The effect on the listener is one of an instant shot to the nervous system, compelling an intensely captivating engagement with experimental electronic pop music that is totally unpredictable and avant-garde.
As one enters “Blaming Eternia”, one will experience a mysterious, slow drone with metal-sounding scrapes, which create an atmosphere of intense pressure and urgency. The eerie yet atmospheric intro gradually grows over several bars before exploding into an unusually energetic, physical beat of dance-pop music and an unusually heavy, brooding bassline. The general theme revolves around a layered and broad examination of the concept of escapism, individual responsibility, and our natural human inclination toward placing blame on some distant cosmic powers or the fictional lands where they dwell as scapegoats for our imperfections and failures in human relationships. But the character in the song realizes that she’s the one to blame, even though there’s plenty of blame to go around. Musically, this is an incredibly complex piece with the juxtaposition of a massive, machine-like beat from the lower end frequencies and an expansive synth line. As for the vocals, Bryanna delivers an incredible vocal performance that will make listeners feel both mentally stimulated and physically pumped up from her impressive performance. She sings with complete confidence and control, having the ability to shift from singing in a whisper in the lower register to an intense belt in her upper register throughout this song’s verses.
The intro of “Phosphene, Dreaming” begins to sound incredibly cinematic, introducing the listener to a dreamlike pad with a rich, swelling soundscape that feels very much like waking up in a virtual world. The distinct rhythms of old-style toms start to emerge from the atmospheric pads as they begin creating a majestic and slightly slow groove, which instantly sets the night scene of the song. The themes that the track touches upon are quite deep, reflecting a state of being lost, inner peace, and an overwhelming desire for emotional comfort. From a poetic point of view, the song reflects a dreamer who closes his eyes to try different colors on; at one point, the dreamer realizes how comfortable it feels to exist outside the realm of physicality, as the feeling of being in outer space is what makes her feel at home. But despite all this cosmic beauty, there is a strong desire for touch and comfort expressed by the phrase: to be held, rocked, like a baby. Musically, the song captures majesty and mesmerization by way of its thickly layered use of bright and vibrant synth work with the style of the eighties. In contrast to previous vocal performances from Bryanna, her vocals are softer in this case, becoming more other-worldly and adding to the music instead of being forceful against the backdrop. The result is a kind of intoxicated state, one where the listener is left to float between melancholy and euphoria, as well as a sense of isolation and an inner fantasy world.
Here, there is no hiding behind the thick layers of synth sounds, as the song opens up with the simple, exquisite sound of strings playing by themselves, an acoustic yet reverberated chord sequence hanging in the air, instantly bringing about a feeling of space and vulnerability before the entrance of the rhythm sections. Being a magnificent tribute to the iconic song “Sleeping Satellite” by Tasmin Archer, the theme of “Satellite Strings” is based around the ideas of accountability, the consequences of humanity’s ambitions, and the mixed feelings surrounding the passing of a love and/or era that is done and over with. It takes a look back at our past decisions with wonder and heavy nostalgia, drawing parallels between outer space and interpersonal distance. Musicality is displayed as the definitive demonstration of pure human talent as the instrumental elements incorporate a blend of organic strings with a steady electronic beat to create an exquisite form of chamber-pop fusion. Bryanna performs her most emotionally charged vocals on this album as she infuses every phrase with a sense of romance and conviction. The effect on the listener becomes very emotional and sentimental as they are taken away from the science fiction theme that is prominent in the rest of the songs.
The track opens with a stark, rhythmic ticking? reminiscent of a heavy mechanical clock, interspersed with dark, isolated minor-chord stabs from a sharp synth-string patch. This cold, rhythmic precision creates an instant feeling of impending finality and psychological unease before a wave of intricate, syncopated rhythms takes over the arrangement. The theme focuses directly on the exhausting, cyclical nature of a toxic relationship that refuses to die, capturing the exact moment when emotional connection curdles into a pattern of mutual entrapment. The lyrics trace the internal turmoil of being trapped in someone else’s orbit, highlighting the painful cycle of being strung along and constantly having one’s internal alarms triggered by a partner’s manipulation. In terms of music, “The Dirge” offers an intelligent balance between intricate synth-pop composition and irresistibly catchy pop melodies through the use of clever drum programming and the memorable sound of a sharp instrumental riff slicing through the thumping low end. Bryanna performs with passion and energy; as the song reaches its peak, she sounds more desperate and stronger than ever, turning the verses into an irresistible sound.
In the introduction, there is a sudden shift to classic dance music, and the opening features a catchy piano rhythm of the Italian style house that comes straight to the ears like sharp percussion sounds. A classic four-on-the-floor kick drum sound suddenly becomes part of the arrangement and makes the song more club-worthy than before. Regarding themes, the song “GhostBaby(Vanishing)” highlights emotions such as disappearing love, fading presence, and the spectral presence of someone. The character in the song lets her partner know that she’s like a ghost who can vanish at will. She informs him of this behavior and invites him to go with her, stating that he’d never know what could have been if he didn’t at least try. Musicality depends heavily on the outstanding ability to sing in an outstanding duet, where there is a wonderful duality in singing, where the female vocals of Bryanna show versatility, while her male partner sings very soulfully. This song has extremely lush and multilayered vocals singing against the powerful beats of the club music and the shining hi-hats. However, its effect on the audience is rather physical and emotional, which compels the body to dance while the mind thinks about the loss of love.
The beginning of the song “Arcades, Aeroplanes” starts off with a low-grade nostalgic bell effect, which is reminiscent of an old video game console starting up. Immediately following that, there is the faint sound of a jet plane starting up and then flying across left to right. The use of sound effectively sets the scene for movement and travel before settling down into a mid-tempo beat. The theme of the song deals with the idea of transience, youth nostalgia, and distance. On one hand, there are the stationary nostalgic times of youth with the video games, while on the other hand, there is the fast and mechanical process of departure using aeroplanes. In essence, the message is conveyed through the lyrics that “you can never go back”. On the musical side of things, “The Driver” relies on a clean and minimal production style that gives space for the different synthetic lines to exist over a steady and relaxed bass pocket. Bryanna’s vocals are incredibly conversational and personal in their approach, foregoing extensive studio treatment in order to highlight the beauty of her natural voice. I loved this song so much because it was nostalgic and made me feel like I was at the arcade again.
The piece starts with an extremely raw, intimate recording of the very studio process, the sound of breathing, clicks of the microphone being adjusted, and an unfinished or buffering. It is like hearing the “Take 1” take in a truly human way, as if looking behind the scenes at how art happens. Musicality is kept deliberately sparse and leisurely, with the instrumentation remaining confined to a minimalist ambient piano backdrop, reminiscent of the Nordic sound, and subtle electronics that evoke the feeling of a chilling gust of wind. The voice of Bryanna is especially vulnerable, with deliberate inclusion of flaws and the rough edge that is characteristic of pain and strength. This leads to a particularly intimate and almost voyeuristic experience of listening to this track, creating a sensation of being a witness to something extremely personal from the empty studio space on the floor.
From the outset, the piece confounds listener expectations by utilizing an ultra-modern glitch technique in which vocal samples are chopped into minuscule rhythmic pieces that create a percussive mesh before being followed by a bass drop in an industrial style. This is a highly technological beginning and certainly seems futuristic.
The conceptual approach to “pDf,” even though it has very limited lyrics, can be seen as a powerful metaphor for the fragmentation of power. The song mentions the Epstein files and Epstein threatening to take down anyone who would release the tapes with him. This song is the one that stood out to me the most, considering the fact that the files are yet to be released and the criminals are yet to be caught and prosecuted. The music is densely packed, experimental, left-of-field electronic pop, notable for its meticulous sound design, abrupt shifts in the direction of the sound, and harsh, distorted synth bass sounds that conflict with the beautiful, fragile melodic lines. Bryanna manages to modify her singing style to suit this industrial backdrop by delivering a precise delivery system with an extremely focused cadence. This song has a jarring yet ultra-modern effect on the listener, making them highly conscious of the theme of the song and retaining it
The climax opens with “Reproach: DjSetMedley(Live In Aberdeen)”, a powerful explosion of a crowd’s sound, of a huge hall’s sound system, and through smooth transitioning, fades out motifs of various songs to form an unbroken medley. This immediately creates an aura of a live performance. The central idea behind the performance can be considered that of ultimate defiance, taking control over one’s own narrative, and finally achieving catharsis. This concept of reproach turns upside down because instead of absorbing other people’s criticism, judgments, or feelings of guilt, this performance turns into a public triumph of purging one’s old demons. On a musical level, Reproach: DjSetMedley (Live in Aberdeen) is a monumentally powerful wall of sound made from the sheer power of the singer’s voice coupled with the endless, unrelenting drive of a DJ set. The vocals by Bryanna are raw and untamed in their energy, taking advantage of the energy in the room to bend the melodies on the fly with experienced showmanship. There is an enormous wall of instrumental sounds here, with overdriven synths and powerful drums being blasted through a live mix. The final result is a feeling of pure bliss, leaving the audience feeling victorious and unified in their euphoria.
Capping off an already monumental trilogy that began with a double vinyl reissue and three-disc box set last year, *(Digital) Assets* by Bryanna Rain is an absolute triumph that speaks volumes for the artist’s developing style. Having this album in one’s possession is like stepping into an entire, deliberately crafted world of sound; each song becomes like another chapter of a novel, packed with profound messages and true-to-life emotion that lingers even after the very last note. This is one unique collection that successfully bridges the gap between thought-provoking, complex music-making and a personal, human experience. What “(Digital) Assets” does is not only secure Bryanna’s place but also cement her as a real force and a legitimate contender in today’s musical scene. The world ought to sit up and take notice of this one because Bryanna Rain isn’t just emerging; she’s an impending storm about to wipe out everything.
