David B, a vocalist and programmer, and Paul McCrudden, a multi-instrumentalist, are better known as the politically charged UK duo Calling All Astronauts. The band believed it would be an appropriate moment to release their fourth album, “Noise Against Tyranny.” The ten-song album was released on July 11, by their own Supersonic Media. Due to the global pandemic, Noise Against Tyranny took four years to complete, but it was well worth the wait and I am so excited to share the details of the album with my devoted readers and music fans
The album’s first song is called “Pray for Your Soul”. The song opens with a cool mix of instrumentation. In this song, the persona invites you to join him in a black world. This black world is a utopia where equality and immortality abound. They also talk about how this world has beautiful men and women. The lyrics of the song made me want to go to the world that they were speaking of. Musically, the instrumentation was a standout and so was the vocal performance, I was unable to pick one over the other. Well, sign me up!, I want to go to the black world!!!
“Will Somebody Help Me” is the next song on the album. This song has a cool guitar riff and drum beat that welcome you to the song. This song presents to listeners a character who is having an inner conflict. This character feels his mind going backwards and deteriorating and asks for help but, no one seems to help him. The character admits that he is taking medication but is still not feeling better. The song also mentions self-harm. The positive side of this song is that the character is not afraid to ask for help like most people struggling with mental illness are. Musically, we appreciate the passionate and raw vocal performance that the band brought. Noble mention to the band for using their platform and their music to talk about mental health
The third song on the album is called “War on Truth”. This song opens with a catchy and foot-tapping beat. This song calls out liars and people who bring disunity and disrespect. They tell these liars that, they may have set honesty back, but now, they are ready to fight back and make sure that truth and unity prevail. In a world where rage bait is rising up, this message is exactly what we needed to hear and we applaud the band for mentioning it. Musically, listeners should expect a killer vocal performance and rocking instrumentation
Next up is the song “The More Than You Need”. The song opens with this synth rock sound I have never heard before. The main theme of this song is greed. The song chastises greedy people and shames them for taking from poor people when they already have more than they could ever need. The song tells them to repent and stop their greed. This song was a two-for-one masterpiece; an entertaining song with the bonus of a life lesson or moral lesson.
“Time to Party” is the next song on the album. Are you ready to party?, Because right off the bat, this song will get you up on your feet ready to dance the day or night away. This song is just what the title says, it is time to party. Listeners are encouraged to free their mind and soul by leaving it all on the dance floor. This request is not difficult at all because you won’t be able to stop yourself from dancing! Come on!, Get your groove on!!!
Next is the song “I can’t breathe”. This song begins in an upbeat and captivating way. This song seems to be describing a persona who was stuck in a toxic relationship. He describes it further by saying that, this person stole his youth in a vicious cycle. This song is honest because being in a toxic relationship feels like being strangled and fighting to catch your breath. Musically, the vocal performance and the instrumentation worked very well together and created a beautiful and magnificent melody and performance. It was hard to stay still during this song even though the lyrics were a little sad
“Take me to hell” is the name of the next song. The song opens with a very rocking and captivating beat. This song is sadly the reality of our world today where, the world is on fire from actual fire, floods, severe climate change, and a society that is cancerous. It is not surprising to feel these things too because it seems like we are headed for destruction and we need to rise up before we are all doomed. The vocal performance was crazy good and hearing this song live will be so powerful and amazing!
Next is the song “No Way Out”. This song opens with a very interesting retro synth rock sound. This song asks listeners to choose between good and evil because there is no more time to be indifferent. The vocal performance was so good that it gave me full-body chills and this is an experience I am glad I did not pass up
“Old World” is the second-to-last song on the album. This song opens with a retro 80s vibe with Metallica infused in it. This song condemns fascists and promotes democracy, stating that they left the former behind in an old world. This song is intense and wild and this ride is something you don’t want to miss
The last song on the album is called 1979”. This song opens with these synth rock sounds that are so captivating. This song is a mirror of how the world is. It talks about racism, immigration issues, religion, and just hatred in general. After listing these albatrosses, the character wonders if we would ever be free from these things. The answer is just that we hope, that one day, these things will no longer be issues. This poetic performance is just the best song to close out the album
The band’s uncompromising blend of Electro, Goth, Post-Punk, Industrial Metal, and EDM has helped them discover a unique position in the alternative music world. It has been four years since the publication of their critically praised third album “Resist,” and with fascism and nationalism continuing to rear their ugly heads throughout the world, this album is a continuation, an encore to address these issues. Wow! I’ve never been more woke and I’ve never been this interested in political issues till I listened to this album. What a talented band!, I can’t wait to hear more music from them
