Northampton singer-songwriter Maddox Jones enters a new year by reworking a track that has been a constant companion to him throughout his time as a solo artist. ‘No More Ghosts’ is a reworked version of a popular track that was originally released as part of his debut EP ‘Headspace’ back in 2020 as a closing track. The track was released on 29th January this year, and with it came a stunning new visualizer directed and filmed by Captures By The Moon. The new visualizer is a masterclass in minimalist storytelling that focuses on atmosphere and inner change from being haunted to being at peace. Here is a breakdown of that journey
The video begins in a cold, dark room where the color scheme is heavily influenced by dark red and black tones. The opening scene is a static shot of the subject of the video, a man (played by Ryan Gerald), who is sitting on the edge of the bed with his head in his hands. This is an example of the “sleepwalking” referenced in the song. As the song progresses and the energy increases, the subject of the video is seen walking around the house in a trance-like state. He does not engage with the environment in any way that is functional. Instead, he seems to be looking off into the distance.
A series of close-ups on his face show that he is suffering from extreme exhaustion, with one side of his face in total darkness, symbolizing the “ghost” that has taken up half of his headspace. The scene shifts into the bathroom, where he is sitting next to a mirror, but his eyes are not on his reflection. Instead, they are gazing into the space behind him. The scene is cutting quickly now, moving between his face and the empty doorway, creating an eerie sense of a ghostly presence. The shots that follows are shots of him sitting in the dark and the red lights begin to flicker and the images get hazy for a second
The climax of this video comes as the lyrics begin to close out. Next comes a sped up scene of the protagonist being restless in his bed. You can tell that her relieved but, it seems that this relief has brought about loneliness The last shot is of him sitting in this dark room and staring blankly into the void
The central theme of “No More Ghosts” is Emotional Exorcism. It moves beyond a simple breakup story to explore the grueling process of reclaiming one’s internal space from the shadows of a former life. The video treats memory as a physical weight, something that haunts hallways, bed, and mind. It reflects a journey of accountability and growth, where the protagonist finally lets go of the person they used to be in that relationship to embrace a new, solitary, but ultimately lighter identity.
While the original “No More Ghosts” felt like a vulnerable, skeletal confession from its creator, this new iteration is alive with a life of its own. Gone are the vulnerable strains of a piano ballad; instead, pulsing synths and sweeping production indicate a shift of a profound nature – from vulnerability to confidence. It is a rare thing indeed to hear a song grow alongside its creator, but this new production perfectly reflects Maddox’s growth as an artist, injecting a new kind of restless energy into a song that has always been very personal. This sonic change is matched by an impressive new visualizer that demonstrates that sometimes less really is indeed more. Moving away from the grandiose and embracing the raw intimacy of less, the visualizer is an exploration of the play of light and dark as it tracks the emotional progression of the song. We see the transformation from the crushing weight of being haunted by what was to the serene and breathtaking beauty of being at peace and closed. It’s an impressive visual that matches the feeling of release and spiritual rebirth that is so prevalent in the track.
This is the start of a new, exciting era for Maddox, as he prepares to unleash his first new music following the massive success of his sophomore record, *Waiting for the World to Turn*. It’s like the sigh of satisfaction after a wild ride of creation, collaboration, and the pure spark of performing live.
