Mercurius, a father-son team from Morpeth, England, has poured their hearts and souls into their latest original album, “Maybe You and I” James focuses on singing and songwriting, while Paul plays guitar, bass, and ukulele. The ten-song record includes contributions from Luke on Grand Piano, Shelley on additional vocals, and Farrar on violin. It was released on 15th August, let’s talk more about it
The first song on the album is called “Maybe You and I”. The song opens with an upbeat melody. The song illustrates a character who is yearning to be with someone but, she doesn’t seem to be interested. This character is still optimistic about him and this lady and hopes they can get along someday. Musically, the vocal performance and instrumentation are fully charged to excite listeners. This opened the album with an upbeat flair
The second song on the album is called “Think About It”. The song opens with a bright burst of energy before the vocals begin. The character in the song tells someone that he or she is wrong about the way they think about something. Musically, listeners will get an awesome vocal and instrumental performance. You might even dance, I know I did.
Next up is “Dear friend”. The song opens with a beautiful guitar melody before the drums set in. The song describes a friend who sticks with you through thick and thin. Musically, the song structure makes the song very entertaining and takes you on a fun ride that you won’t forget anytime soon
“Our enemy “ is the song that comes next. This song opens with yet another upbeat instrumentation. The song talks about a character who is going places and warns everyone about his enemy. This song did not disappoint. The vocals were wild and enjoyable and the instrumentation was beyond exciting
“Great Evil Love” is the next song on the album. The song opens with a lovely ukulele melody. In the song, the character has been left alone by his partner, and he admits that he might have been the reason she left and apologizes. The vocal performance was so dreamy and beautiful and the ukulele solo was just so heavenly, I felt like I was floating on a cloud. This was a wonderful song
Next up is “white flash (rock)”. The song opens with a killer guitar melody. The character in the song talks about seeing the light. It seems that this character is having or has just had a near-death experience. Many people have said they saw a great light flash before them. Despite the message of the song, this song is very rock-infused and groovy, after all, it’s in the song title, and, rock they did!
Up next is a song called “Fickle World”. This song opens with a breathtaking violin melody before the drums set in. This song is about a character who falls in love and gets married to her. He attributes their love story to the flickering nature of the world. It was interesting to witness this story unfold and it was done in a very entertaining and tasteful way
“Heaven and Earth” is the next song on the record. The song is foot-tapping right from the start. The song poses a question to listeners. The question is, what would we do if we had the power or strength to move heaven and earth? I loved this question because unlike wishes from a genie that grants you three wishes, this is a power that is unlimited. Aside from the question being interesting, the vocal performance and the instrumentation really made the song something great and thrilling. 8 songs in, and this album is still new and fresh to me and you will agree with me when you listen to it
The next song is titled “Fear”. The song opens in a slow and steady way. This song talks about the inevitability of death and making our lives worth living and leaving this earth with no regrets. The song also encourages us not to run from fear because it’s part of life. This is a lesson that everyone will appreciate and we thank the band for sharing it. Musically, we get a softer instrumentation and a Grammy-worthy vocal performance that will really get you thinking profoundly while entertaining you as well
The last song on the album is called “Forever Fall in Love”. This song opens with short static noises, guitar, and drum sounds. The song tells to never fall in love and also to forever fall in love. This is a decision that is very vital because, the one you choose will be how you choose to live your life. So you could be bitter throughout your life or choose to fall in love, even though it’s risky and you might get your heart broken, we should strive to lead with love instead of bitterness and hate. The vocal performance was perfect as usual and the instrumentation, flatters the vocals so much so. These two sides of a song end the album
Mercurius’ album, recorded at Blast Studios in Newcastle, is a labour of love showcasing his many musical interests and talents. “Maybe You and I “explores sombre themes such as suicide, old age, death, and grief, with outstanding tunes like “Fickle World” and “Fear” resonating strongly with listeners. The album’s distinct sound was carefully developed during the recording process, with the band experimenting to produce memorable moments, such as the ship horn sound at the beginning of the first track. Mercurius feels that this album, demonstrates their commitment to making music that is both significant and memorable, and yes they are right, I could not have said it better. I loved this album so so much and I can’t wait to hear more of their music
