Hello to all my devoted readers and music lovers. Today, we welcome English ZACHARY MASON back to our blog. Mason is no stranger to our blog; his songs, “Fathers”, “Sweet Girl”, and the hilarious “The Funky Martians”, are songs we are not over and will not be over anytime soon. On 3rd October, he released a three-song EP called “5…4…3…2…1…”. Let’s go through the EP together.
The first song on the EP is called “5…4…3…2…1…”. The song opens with interference sounds and a rocket launching before a lovely guitar and drum beat sets in. The song is about launching a rocket into outer space. It tells us the things that go on in the background when the countdown for the rocket to launch begins. The vocal performance was very entertaining, and the instrumentation was just out of this world. This song opened the EP perfectly.
The next song on the EP is the song “The Funky Martians”. This song is a song that I am familiar with and a song I still listen to it everyday. It presents a highly fascinating story about humans fleeing a devastated Earth for the red dunes of Mars to establish a new colony! In this tune, issued to promote the EP, a colony ship arrives on Mars and is attacked by hostile Martians! Then Johnny, a character in the song, makes a mistake by offering them cake. The song then describes how, still afraid, Johnny turned on the radio instead of a weapon. Fortunately, the Martians enjoyed what they were hearing and began dancing. The humans had to keep the music playing to distract the Martians while they settled in. The song hilariously tells how a lucky mishap calms the Martians!. Musically, the song combines cosmic, psychedelic, and experimental rock themes. Nate Barnes of the critically acclaimed rock band Rose Hill Drive played drums, while Little Big Town’s John Thomasson played bass. The vocal delivery was well-suited to the instrumentation.
The last song on the EP is called “Earthsick”. The song opens with an ethereal and dramatic synth sound before the gritty guitar and drum sounds set in. This song is what I call realization regret. In the song, we are told that the humans who welcomed the Martians blew up their home(Earth) to follow the Martians they welcomed in the Funky Martians song. They tell us how much they hate the Martians, common things on Earth like grass. This song to me is another version of the phrase “Not all things that glitter are gold” because these men found out that they hate the Martians after they thought the Martians were so cool and interesting. This song has a moral lesson that we all need, and I appreciate Mason for this profound song. Musically, Mason gives the best performance as usual, with instrumentation that was tailored to every note in the song. This wonderful song ends the EP
The EP continues the story of mankind escaping a wrecked and dying Earth and attempting to colonize Mars… There is a lot of comedy and weirdness, as well as the rare insightful remark here and there. Nate Barnes, a member of the widely regarded Rock Band Rose Hill Drive, played all of the drums, while John Thomasson, who plays with Little Big Town, played the bass on tracks 1 and 2. This EP was so wonderful, and it was a pleasure to hear more of Mason’s music because he is so talented. I am on the edge of my seat, and I can’t wait to hear more music from him.
