Pause whatever it is that you are currently doing, forget about everything else, and listen with all your being to one of the most amazing soundscapes coming from a musical group that has stolen our hearts and kept us hooked ever since we came across them. Little Quirks. With lead vocalists Abbey and Mia Toole, together with lifelong friends and musicians Jordan Rouse and Lachlan Raeside, the family-formed powerhouse that is Little Quirks has matured through the years with us. They’ve created songs that seem to take us back to some chapter of our own life stories and have transformed their unique combination of sunny indie rock, vibrant indie pop, rich Americana, and dreamy dream pop from the ocean winds of New South Wales to the world’s soundscape. And now, it looks like Australia’s best indie rock band is back on their throne, with their latest amazing album entitled “Game Boy.” From the first note onwards, it is a tour de force of lyrics and sheer emotion, and believe me when I say that I will tell you precisely why this superb song is guaranteed to be your soundtrack for the whole year.
As soon as the needle touches the record, the song explodes into life in an exhilarating burst of flashing guitar work and rhythm so electrifying and uplifting that it is akin to a shot of pure adrenaline into your soul. It does not just slowly ease its way into your awareness; it snatches hold of you right at the very beginning, arresting time completely in that very first second and demanding all of your unwavering attention. There is simply no mistaking the explosive quality of lightning-in-a-bottle that awakens you and immediately makes the world drop away so that all that is left is the sheer delight of the music.
From the lyric standpoint and theme-wise, “Game Boy” hits right at the core with a story that is so precisely written and relatable that you cannot help but think you are reading straight from your own private diary. The song targets a certain modern-day mythology: the slick-talking, silver-tongued, romantic man who has somehow mastered the game of making everyone around him feel like he has put the entire world on hold. We should all just be honest with each other. We’ve all encountered this exact type of guy before. He is the romantic architect of our fictitious future and the one who stares straight at you with an eerily precise conviction, telling you that you’re the unique soul that he has been waiting his whole life for. He makes getting to know him into a performance by dazzling you with how he plunges himself into a deeply intimate conversation that most men don’t even know how to spell. He’s the one who starts the heavy talk, talking about the bright future full of possibilities while already planning the names of your future kids and how everything would be like during your tenth wedding anniversary celebration. The harsh magic of it all is that the breathtaking fall is inevitable; as you wait and blink, he disappears into thin air, ghosting you completely, leaving you gazing into the silent abyss, trying to figure out if it had all been just a dream.
Hello, dear viewers, welcome to my masterclass and TED Talk on the single factor that sets apart good musicians from the very great ones: intentionality in music. Intentionality is that beautiful thing where you can feel the heartbeat, the thought, and the artist’s artistic intent in every single line of the song. While most artists are content to upload any old lyric video or random picture in connection with their new music release, Little Quirks are on a totally different level of genius in that they have created a full sensory experience by delivering us not only a music video but also a perfectly conceptual cover image. It is just so clear from that one cover art. In that one single shot, they successfully show us the real, empty face of the modern “game boy”; he is a man pixelated; he is a living representation of a man who sees people’s hearts and emotions as nothing more than pixels in a video game; he tries everything to drag us into his insensitive world of self-neglect and lack of self-awareness. The cover itself is the best visual cue that makes sure we listeners don’t only listen to the lyrics but grasp the concept in its full intensity right before the song starts playing. And there it is, there is that perfect intentionalism I am looking for all the time in music, created by a band who never fails to deliver anything but perfection.
Prepare yourselves for witnessing the inevitable and mind-blowing rise of Little Quirks, as this talented family band has been making waves on stages across the globe with their catchy indie rock music and phenomenal harmonies, and mark my words, the best of them is yet to come. Having a remarkable list of international tours and collaborations already done and dusted behind their backs, it is clear that Little Quirks have been destined to conquer the whole world of music and make it their own, leaving absolutely nothing but dust behind. Now, the time to hop onto the amazing musical gravy train has not passed yet, and I am sure you will not want to miss the chance to do it! After all, everyone knows it’s girls who run the world!
