Rising up from the hushed nooks and crannies of Didcot, Purple Grace surfaces as an unstoppable five-piece post-hardcore band, bringing with it a distinct sound that is simultaneously fierce and humane. The initial building blocks of the band were laid down by Luke, who plays the guitar, and Lewis, who beats the drums, as founding members. In 2022, the band’s musical landscape underwent a transformation when Ed joined as the lead guitarist. However, it wasn’t until Ben’s arrival as the bassist and Emily’s entry as vocalist in 2025 that Purple Grace was transformed to its current avatar as a powerful mix of alternative rock and pop-punk, with a dash of punk metal thrown in for good measure. They have left behind the comfort zone of their original indie rock style and evolved into something more exciting, electrifying, and unique. Their latest song, “Just 19,” released on May 8th, marks a new era for the band. Let’s dig deep into the song.
There comes a time when the instruments come out in a ferocious assault on your ears; it’s like listening to a musical killing machine. The music grabs you with its intensity, compelling you to give your full attention, right from the start. But once the lyrics enter the fray, the listening experience becomes not only thrilling but captivating. This is because there is something irresistible about the way it is delivered, leaving you craving for more.
Thematically, “Just 19” explores the divergent ways in which two people have led their lives many years after their breakup. This is a song that portrays a clear contrast where one person looks within and realizes how immaturely he/she acted during their relationship, but the other has held on to resentment. There is a certain universal theme contained in this song that the relationships we create during our youth don’t have enough strength in them to last through time. The fact is that sooner or later we grow out of what we used to be and what once mattered stops mattering anymore. However, there is also an important aspect of this song which helps to realize how significant it is for us to acknowledge our evolutionary process. Heartbreaking is already an experience difficult enough to go through, but what makes it even harder is when we do not take care of ourselves and are unable to forgive others and be able to laugh about the mess we have left behind. In case we continue living in the prison created by our past mistakes, then no matter how good another person might be for us, it will make no difference since our heart is still stuck somewhere else.
With regards to production, “Just 19” presents a complex, multi-dimensional weave of elements, from the intense energy of the likes of Paramore and You Me at Six to the edgy, almost aggressive sounds of Nickelback and Shinedown. Even the hint of Bring Me the Horizon in this tune showcases that Purple Grace has been expanding its vocabulary in songwriting and music production since 2019. However, what makes “Just 19” truly unique is the story behind its seven years of crafting. The origins of the song date back to as early as 2018, which is when the band created a simple, bare-bones acoustic chorus that remained unrefined for several years. It was not until 2025 that Purple Grace finally developed this fragment into a polished, fully-formed composition. In doing so, the group demonstrated impressive creativity and ability to transform their past creations into something new, bringing their previous ideas up-to-date and making them shine anew.
This is definitely a style that begs to be heard on stage. It is filled with memorable tunes, big beats, and guitars that are simply out of control. There is just something about the way they play that is pure electricity. To hear their music for the first time has made me very happy, especially considering the quality and authenticity of what they are creating. Whether they decide to stick to the style that got them started or forge new ground with this fresh sound, Purple Grace has proven themselves worthy of remaining a staple in the world of music and we are waiting to be fed!
