Fans of this blog will also know that Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends do more than just make music; they turn our souls into alchemy. If you have wasted days upon days opening up your heart to all that this musical artist offers, then you would agree with me that he does much more than play music; he is a craftsman of emotion and a maestro of soundscapes. If you happen to be among the believers who are made completely breathless by the mystifying haze of “Happy People Won’t Hear” or are stripped naked by the agony of “Your Love” or are carried away by the nostalgic glow of “Vagnar Av Guld,” “The Sparrow,” and “The Hag,” brace yourselves. The King is back and more magnificent than ever before, and now with yet another masterpiece called “John In Roses’ Deep.” This album was released on the 15th of May, and I am proud to unveil it to you.
The song begins with a gentle, folksy sound that immediately takes you back in time, creating the vibrant, sunny setting of a Renaissance festival with the smell of roasting turkey legs wafting through the air and the taste of mead in your mouth. However, this fantastical start is not just an indulgence in mood but a lesson in how to create suspense and fascination, burrowing deep into your mind and making you surrender completely to the path ahead.
Underneath its charming facade is an element of intense darkness, one that digs its roots into the fertile soil of Scandinavian folklore. The story “John in Roses’ Deep” gets its terrifying sustenance from a Swedish ballad from the 18th century known as “Sven i Rosengård”, a story bathed in blood, guilt, and endless vigilance by the mother. In essence, the song chronicles the frantic steps of John, a person who is crossing borders not because of any sense of adventure, but due to the burden of committing either patricide or fratricide by killing his brother. He is a ghost running away from the law, with his soul broken by the act of murder that he has just committed. Is he able to get away from the authorities and disappear into the wilderness? The age-old lyrics leave his fate open to speculation. However, the real emotional core of the song, and the one which stays with you long after the music stops playing, is the woman left alone in the aftermath of the homestead’s quiet devastation. One can only imagine what sort of unimaginable and empty despair consumes a woman who is faced with the worst possible tragedy: the loss of her son to an early death in a violent manner, and the loss of another son to the unyielding shadows of the gallows and perpetual banishment. It is the unrelenting dual grief that the artist has managed to convey with such skill, transforming a centuries-old story of warning into an elegy for the tragic limits of maternal love and family ghost ships.
In terms of music, however, the song can be described as an exercise in atmosphere and texture, with a lush mix of acoustic guitars, clear harpsichord melodies, subtle mandolins, and a majestic shawm, which makes the song firmly grounded in its rustic roots. However, just when you think you have everything figured out, the song transforms before your very ears, taking a stunning turn in its last minute. With a powerful backing of thundering percussion from the brilliant Andreas Quincy Dahlbäck and intense electric guitars, the song becomes a classic rock anthem. In the time it takes you to gasp for air, the storm breaks up and dissipates. The acoustic instruments take back the stage and lead the way to a tranquil journey until they breathe out in a whispering breeze that dies away. Crafted with exquisite craftsmanship, including the beautiful mandolin playing of my friend Joachim Hiort af Ornäs, this is not only a song but also a filmic voyage from the misty times to the golden age of rock music.
In conclusion, “John In Roses’ Deep” proves to be an incredible work of art that shows off the absolute, never-failing consistency and immense talent of an artist who never fails. The instrumental work is not only a musical addition to the piece but rather an actual time machine and a witness of the crime itself. Due to the genius of the music itself, one is not only listening to a song but rather watching how the crime takes place, and later sitting in the unbearable silence next to a woman watching her son who will never return again. Speechless due to the amazing perfection of this piece, I am already eagerly counting the minutes until I get my heart stolen once more.
