Created by a Finnish musician with unbelievable freedom of expression, the songwriter, producer, and singer who composed the music, lyrics, and produced the album, “Follow Me” features a revolutionary idea called “Adult Metal”. Combining the polished, sophisticated melodic style of adult contemporary music with the forceful sound of heavy metal, DR. M. avoids clichés typical of youth and deals with more mature subjects such as love, perseverance, reflection, and hope. The nine-song album was released on 20th June. This character doesn’t even let death stop him from his undying love and still pledges his love to her, and this time around, he pledges that since she followed him in life, he will now follow her in death(“you know then I will always follow you”). From a musical point of view, this song makes use of the captivating and crystal clear vocals of Maria Moon, which are effortlessly carried by the magnificent lead guitar work and the pop-rock style. The effect on the listener is entirely engrossing, creating right from the beginning the main idea behind the whole album.

With a much more unrestricted attitude towards life, the track “It’s All Music” begins with the happy, twinkling sounds of high-pitched notes accompanied by the energetic beats of drums that lighten up the atmosphere instantly. The song is a meta comment on the freedom of art and breaks all boundaries of genre limitations to show that true expression is not limited to any specific definitions and categories. This song is the encapsulation of the power of music, how it can make you feel, because we can all admit that music makes everything a little better. With the lyrics talking about the unifying power of sound and the happiness of being open to anything without having to think about it too much, musically the song is characterized by sunny vocals interlaced with elaborate instrumental flutters and modern production. Overall, the effect on the listener is truly freeing and happy-making, becoming an instant mood lifter for anybody listening.
With an uplifting feel for scale, “(Anyone Can Be A) Hero” opens with melodic piano chords and rhythmic beats that create a nostalgic aura of pop-rock in the 80s style until the electric sounds come into play. Environmentalists always tell us that if we all treat the planet better, it’ll not rebel against us and end up as dust. Musically, it features soaring guitar lines that float on top of an intensifying background, along with an energetic vocal line that delivers catchy melodies.
Taking a slower pace and becoming rather atmospheric and cinematic, “On the Foggy Way Back Home” opens with light and mournful strums of acoustic guitar, owl hooting sounds, conveying the sense of solitude and quietness of traveling alone in the night through the fog. This is a song about introspection, about being tired, both physically and mentally, and about the long way to peace, comfort, and security after hard times. The lyrics are highly reflective, offering clear visions of loneliness and memories. The character in the song seems to have left home or lost his way home, but he is determined to go back home, and he will let nothing stand in his way. Thematically, it deals with the chaos, the temptations, and the overpowering systems of the current world and the issue of keeping one’s integrity and truth when there is corruption all around him. In terms of lyrics, this is a very powerful cautionary song covered in lots of metaphors. Musically, this song evolves from being very light in nature to being a metal song with heavy guitar riffs and rhythms and great vocals by Maria Moon.
Emitting rays of warmth and liveliness, “Song to the Sun” begins with the deep stomping sound of floor tom drums, along with an overdriven guitar riff playing prominently in the music. The overall theme of the song is about the sun. The persona in the song is praising the sun. He tells us how important the sun is because it lights the world up and brings new opportunities, and how we won’t survive without it. Solar references have been used in the lyrics for their healing powers and the burning power needed to start anew. In terms of musicality, Maria has delivered angelic-sounding, high-pitched voices over the strong rhythms of heavy rock music.
Infusing a dose of self-reflection and theatricality, the song “Rock & Roll Fantasy” begins with a spirited drum roll and the strut of a bassline capturing the excitement of going up onstage. Rock & Roll Fantasy engages with the myth, glamour, and romanticized dreams of being part of the rock scene. This character tells us how his mum believed in him and told him how good he’ll feel when he starts playing for big crowds who are screaming and shouting at him. While lyrically Rock & Roll Fantasy delves into the discrepancy between the personality of the artist on stage and his or her humanity offstage, musically it takes great pleasure in vocal hooks, energized instruments, and strutting guitar riffs, making full use of classic rock energy packaged within metal production. It gives the audience a highly enjoyable wild ride into rock history with a wink.
Creating a grandiose and amazing finale for the entire album, “Shanghai Night” opens up like an epic musical odyssey, which begins with the dark atmospheric sounds of a synthesizer. This theme revolves around the ideas of loneliness, mystery, anonymity of the neon city at night, and emotional clarity found in the echoing and empty streets of the faraway metropolis. In the lyrics, the theme appears to be a great script of a cinema noir about connections between people from different parts of the world. Musically, this grand finale is performed by DR. M. as an epic eight-minute journey, where she performs her most powerful and emotional vocal passages, surrounded by the sounds of haunting ambient music and hard rock.
Indeed, there is something undeniably exciting about seeing an innovator break all the rules of art. With their debut album, DR. M. not only broke the boundaries of the existing genre conventions but has managed to create a whole new type of music on its own. Going beyond the beaten path and venturing into the territory of the “Adult Metal” genre, a true tour de force, where the mature emotions of the adult contemporary genre are combined with the power of the heavy metal style, in this album, they have created something absolutely brilliant. In all nine carefully written tracks, the world-class skills of a lead singer are shown through the impressive mastery and power of their voice, which goes from gentle vulnerability to powerful force in the blink of an eye. Being a loyal fan since day one of my musical journey, I feel like it is my early Christmas; I am totally fascinated by this genius creation and am already counting the sweet hours till I get to listen to them again.
