To describe a genius of this caliber using such an inadequate term as artist is almost insulting; he is truly a visionary who has defined the tone and emotion of our lives through his unparalleled works of art. Our hearts have always been fully immersed in everything he does, whether finding comfort in the spiritual, transcendent nature of “Song for God” or being consumed by the sheer cathartic power of “Trapped (I’m Doing Fine).” He never fails to create cinematic worlds before our eyes, from the enthralling breadth of the Next Time (I Won’t Be Falling) EP to the captivating pull of “Next Time (i won’t be falling/you’ve got me falling)” throughout his incredible discography. Our hearts were with him through the enthralling world of The Vault 1 (C’batch Smooth / Rough) and the enthralling metamorphosis captured in C’batch The Vault 2 (Soul/RNB/Pop/Rock/Reggae), and we stand in complete awe of the visual splendor brought about by The Vault 4 – Cinematic featuring “Our Little Pooh Pea (The Last Light) 4 – Cinematic.” This time around, however, it is time for the master to return and take us into the next glorious epoch. I Guess You Want It This Way, his latest EP, has come out on September 8th, and it is set to blow us away once more and show us what music can really do to our souls. Let us jump right into the depths of this amazing new creation.
The EP opens majestically with “I Guess You Want It This Way (Cinematic Reggae) 1 **”, which does not open with a regular reggae rhythm but rather with beautiful strings of an orchestra that flow elegantly over a subtle guitar skank with an echo effect and ambient sub-bass. This majestic start becomes a great basis for expressing feelings of giving up one’s control to explore the pain of accepting a partner’s desire to move away from you at the crossroads in your romantic relationships. The character seems to persist in pursuing this woman in the beginning, but after a while he comes to understand that you can’t force love, and love is not a prison after all. He lets her go and decides to keep the flame burning for her. It’s painful to let someone you love go, hoping that if they belong with you, they will return to you because, sometimes, they never come back, a pill that is difficult to swallow. The voice of C’batch comes like a gift from heaven with its silky texture and soulful, deep sound floating off-beat with the music. Musically, the production brilliance is evident, as the track seamlessly interlinks soaring swells from violins, sharp stabs of brass, and the deep throb of the bassline that grounds the entire cinematic endeavor. The listener gets immediately transported into an engrossing, sentimental trance as one experiences the poignant reality of heartbreak contained in an addictive rhythm.
The tone darkens to something more theatrical in nature; “I Guess You Want It This Way (Cinematic Reggae) 2” throws the listener for a loop as it begins with a lone and reverberant rim shot delay, coupled with an ominous low-brass swelling and synthesizer filter rising before the entrance of the massive rhythm section. In 2026, the irreplaceable C’batch went back to his own extensive music history in order to give new vibrancy to a work which he had been developing for many years, completed the lyrics, and lifted up the composition in six amazing, unique renditions. The incredible piece of work is dedicated to the renowned Jamaican guitarist Ernest Ranglin, as an outcome of the memorable coincidence of the two brilliant musicians at Heathrow Airport in 2001. The release, on behalf of Stevette Music, Inc., being one of the projects of the imaginative dive of C’batch in his personal history, in 2026, I Guess You Want It This Way is a remarkable bridge between the years with the perfect combination of decades of world-class songwriting with reggae heartbeat and R&B class. As if it is not just the excavation of a forgotten song, but rather the completion of an incomplete musical exchange, an incomparable, dormant exchange that has been carefully fostered and polished until now, reaching its full artistic potential by C’Batch himself. And for us, those who have had the honor to follow his incredible career so far, to see such a great artist reconnect with his past with so much passion and elegance is nothing short of pure pleasure.
In the case of “I Guess You Want It This Way”, the incredibly talented C’batch presents us with another stunning piece of The Vault, giving us a fantastic six-track EP, whose inception can be traced almost twenty-six years ago. Originating from the idea to make a truly reggae song that was born in C’batch’s mind from the constant and loving encouragement of his wife, Yvette, who hails from Jamaica, this masterpiece has been languishing in the artist’s vault for many years. However, once again, the song’s mesmerizing hooks, harmonies, and melodic verses could not be overlooked. Every time he drops an album, C’batch exposes a new sphere of his genius where he effortlessly conquers every genre of music and pushes the boundaries of contemporary music to a whole new level. He does not just master different genres of music; he dominates them with such an extraordinary flair that it leaves us mesmerized and speechless.
