Born and bred in the rural edges of Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire before settling into Norfolk, where she now resides, Lois Powell sings with a level of stark honesty and vulnerability that will literally make you come to a standstill. There is pain and honesty in her music, something so fragile and yet completely honest that the world has no choice but to highlight her talent. For this next adventure, she finds herself collaborating once again with Night Wolf, a renowned British sound designer and producer who needs no introduction. If you’ve heard this name before, it is because he creates soundscapes and mixes for some of the biggest brands in entertainment, like Netflix, Channel 4, and even the live broadcasts of the MLB and NFL. But for us, it’s the brains behind “Kickback”, the fantastic collaboration with The Fods that will always reside completely free of charge in our minds. A union of these forces was sure to create an earthquake; let me introduce you to “The Laws of Life,” their new and exciting release, which came out on March 21st. This track is the perfect combination of contrasts, with the divine and human truth by Powell contained within the immaculate and atmospheric production by Night Wolf. Here’s why.
The song starts off with a piercing sound from a synth instrument that breaks the silence; however, it is quickly followed by a melodic composition that is nothing less than angelic. The composition creates a wonderful atmosphere, but nothing really prepares one for the coming of the vocals. This is an amazing, breath-taking introduction; one can even think that he or she is in heaven now. The perfect balance between haunting and heavenly makes the vocals truly incredible.
Thematically, “The Laws of Life” is a profound and introspective sonic time, a machine, an emotionally charged letter addressed to yourself in the past. In particular, it tells the story of Ambition, Success, and Ambition and the complicated beauty of coming-of-age. There is an obvious feeling of Nostalgia about the whole production, speaking of the inherent Desire to leave behind the chaos, find yourself, and come back to the peacefulness of Home.
In general, the track skillfully conveys the constantly changing nature of human, Connection, addressing both the romantic notions of Love, and Romance, as well as the necessity of staying true to your personal, Individuality, and beliefs. This song is a product of Change, New beginnings, and the strength and power within oneself. It is, indeed, a celebration of Life, and a call for Faith, Destiny, Dreams, and Energy. Finally, it is all about Gratitude, for life and Time, past.
Production-wise, “The Laws Of Life” is the fourth partnership for Lois Powell and Night Wolf, which takes shape as an enchanting musical piece full of dreams. The track flows with a soft, almost imperceptible undertone of psychedelia, accompanied by airy vocals, which appear both light and earthy at the same time. An ethereal glow emanates from the music arrangement because of the perfect harmonies of Lois, while her lead vocals hold all the emotional content of the song. The song lyrics are inspiring, introspective, and comforting, resembling a deeply personal act of coming home. The sound texture in this case is carefully selected; plucked pizzicato strings float on top of the haunting sounds of the synth, whereas sharp guitar sounds punctuate the somber beat of this song, heavily influenced by trip hop music. However, the moment when the listener gets used to the sound comes the trademark of the artist. In the closing lines of the song, the beat changes to a harsher one and adds an element of panic and fear to the end of the song. The result is a fascinating combination that is peaceful and dreamy yet incredibly purposeful.
Night Wolf, whose name should now be familiar to all residents of Norfolk, met Lois Powell at an open mic night in Bedford. This was how two amazing artists got their start on an amazing collaboration that has already resulted in the creation of four magnificent tracks. But who knows what other tracks are being planned behind closed doors? What I admire most about Night Wolf is his ability to work together, which he does without any hints of competition whatsoever, because he ensures that every voice he uses in his production is heard. “The Laws of Life” is proof of the above. The song shows how Night Wolf’s generosity pays off and how he allows Lois Powell to take center stage, resulting in something magnificent being created out of their collaboration. We wish to praise them both for creating such a masterpiece and eagerly await the next creation!
