Now there is nothing like a good example of raw, powerful, and heart-breaking storytelling! Let me tell you that British-born singer-songwriter Frederick James is based in Perth, Western Australia, and he has put his heart and soul into making music. He has drawn from his experiences of being a father, addict, and recovering from that, along with hope for better times.
This EP was released on August 14th and has been named Let Me Give You A Good Day. It includes four songs, which are just amazing. This EP has turned out to be not just some songs; it has become something beyond that. And it is really surprising and miraculous how a man can transform his demons, responsibilities, and hardships into such amazing music! From the deep and confessional “Pound of Flesh” to the comforting and warm “Let Me Give You A Good Day,” James has proved himself to be a true artist.
The artist starts his impressive quartet of songs entitled Frederick James with “Pound of Flesh”. He introduces his music using an intricate combination of soft and thoughtful strums of an acoustic guitar accompanied by the sound of a slow swelling of a cello, creating a unique immersive atmosphere before the rhythm kicks in. In terms of lyrics, the artist explores the difficult experience of struggling through the friction of life as a person with responsibilities every day and the high cost of staying alive and facing the challenges and demands that could easily break one down. The character in the song talks about a person who is the glue that holds everybody together. Musically, James provides a soulful performance using a raw and gritty vocal technique and the rich instrumentation of the roots rock genre, which includes driving rhythms and string sounds.
Transitioning to an entirely brighter acoustic setting, “Let Me Give You A Good Day” begins with an uplifting piano melody that moves along like a fresh morning breeze, thus providing the basis for a comfortable and informal sound. The central theme is related to an act of saving from an emotional point of view and can be seen as a promise to provide a person with assistance in carrying his/her weight in order to give some place for a break when the world treats him/her in such a harsh manner. The persona in the song recognizes that life has been difficult lately for his person, so he suggests a yes day of sorts, where he makes her smile and forget her worries. This song really hit home, especially during Mother’s Day when children all around the world want to give their mothers a good day. From the point of view of musicality, James shows a rather tender and vulnerable singing style that sounds not like a professionally performed one but like a whisper in somebody’s ear in the context of cozy indie-folk and a melodic setting.
Shifting towards a darker and intense musical backdrop, “Walking Through Hell” kicks off with a sharp and pounding violin rhythm along with fast-strumming guitar chords. Lyrically, the song takes no time to jump right into the reality of surviving difficult times as it continues to look into the flames without any intentions of getting stuck inside of them. He reminds us to keep going for the sake of our loved ones, using them as a beacon of hope. As for the music, James combines a rough but energetic vocal delivery with an intense rhythmic guitar part to perfectly contrast dark themes with a sense of drive. This creates a very powerful effect, turning a tough fight into a tried-and-true ballad of endurance.
This deeply philosophical track forms the final and most poignant entry of the EP with “Under The Clocks”, which opens with a lovely intro. The lyrics focus on the inexorable march of time and the feeling of nostalgia, along with those moments when we take time to reflect upon our choices and experiences while we come to a halt in life. The character in the song is hopeful about love and romanticizes where he lives. Musically, this track sees James giving one of his most vulnerable performances vocally by allowing himself to crack in true emotion, accompanied by a minimal yet very moving string and slow guitar melody arrangement.
In what promises to be the beginning of a glorious comeback after years of deserved silence, Frederick James emerges from the shadows once again with Let Me Give You A Good Day, a dazzling four-track introduction which demonstrates beyond a doubt that sometimes certain voices cannot be silenced for very long. Born out of a powerful season of personal songwriting, this EP is a perfect blend of raw and emotional storytelling which boldly explores the tender territory of family life, fierce resilience, tangled love stories, and difficult journeys towards healing. James blends brutally honest lyrics with epic, stadium-sized melodic structures, creating an indie folk/Americana sound palette that is not only beautiful but timeless and relevant, reminiscent of Noah Kahan’s profound lyrical honesty, Noel Gallagher’s stadium-sized melodic majesty, and The War on Drugs’ atmospheric power all in one. And there truly is no second in this album that will fail to mesmerize you in its beautifully coherent whole that is as emotionally captivating as it is impossible to look away from.
