There is no greater joy than welcoming British singer-songwriter and undeniably powerful vocalist TaniA Kyllikki into our virtual home once again. TaniA is one of those unique, once-in-a-lifetime artists in the world of soul-stirring music, someone whose voice is not just something you hear through your speakers, but rather something that is permanently rooted in your very chest. Songs like “Feel Good Vibes” and the achingly beautiful “I Promise I Will Wait For You” still ring clear in my head without any rent whatsoever, reminding me of just what true heart-on-the-sleeve singing sounds like. She returns to our radio waves once again with the August 28th release, “Human”, another song that shows us, once again, that TaniA Kyllikki is operating at a whole other level. So sit tight, and I’ll take you through it all.
The track starts off with an ethereal and shimmering sound of the synths that make you feel like gravity is suspended long before any lyrics drop. However, the second that TaniA’s vocals come into the picture, time just stands still. This is something like a surreal experience for your senses. She plays with such an instrument that makes you feel as though you are watching a bird fly for the first time in your life, catching an updraft and flying over the heavy clouds with ease. It is just a beautiful aerial elegance that few other vocalists can perform.
TaniA found inspiration for the creation of her music from an overwhelming empathy for the world that is overwhelmed by all the digital noise and hostility, as well as mindless division on the Internet that targets different races and cultures. The pain burned within her until it had to be expressed through a song. And then there came a moment of pure magic when she approached her husband working at his computer and said, “Baby, we have to write another song, called HUMAN.” It is no secret that the Internet space we live in has become a hostile environment where people who belong to minority groups or are different in one way or another are constantly being bullied and criticized. However, while other artists try to lecture people on this matter, TaniA teaches through her artistry. She refrains from preaching and uses a velvet-covered mirror to raise the key questions of today: Who are we as people? How can we tear down the walls between us and live in peace?
When it comes to production, TaniA Kyllikki is not only one of the world’s best vocalists but that she’s also a master craftsman and true creative artist, having complete control over her musical realm. Serving simultaneously as her own vocal producer, layout engineer, lead vocalist, and back-up choir all by herself, she constructs every breathtaking vocal arrangement starting from scratch, recording her genius vocals directly into voice memos on her cell phone without involving any instruments at all. From those pure vocal blueprints comes her husband, the true multi-instrumentalist and a creative counterpart par excellence, Rynellton (Garry D. Hairston), who applies his own kind of magic as a producer. Whether it’s about co-writing together from scratch or making rich, velvet-coated instrumental tapestries for her vocal ideas, Rynellton paints around her vocals with the utmost finesse and respect. It’s a truly magical creative collaboration in which her unique vocal ideas act as the North Star while the music builds up around it.
In order to appreciate the significance of the enormity behind “HUMAN,” one must first get a sense of the furnace that produced it. After suffering through well over a year of serious sickness, following a three-year ordeal of 54 recurring UTIs, dangerous Urosepsis, several hospital stays, and six further months of difficult weekly treatment sessions, some souls may well have hung up their tools for good. Not so for TaniA Kyllikki, whose passion for music is not merely a profession but a calling that she will not forsake. With no ability to enter recording studios and stand under the lights, she merely changed her battlegrounds. By turning a small corner of wardrobe space in the same room as her bed into a vocal studio of her own making, she recorded her ethereal vocals whenever her body allowed.
In this way, “HUMAN” is not simply another return to the airwaves; it is a victorious banner raised on the ground of sheer survival. It is the living, breathing example of how artistic mission will not be smothered by any physical agony, and how the message of unity among humanity that was formed in a small room could reach the whole wide world. This album has come into existence due to the anguish of a fractured world, made through hard personal struggle, and brought to us in the form of a ray of hope that nothing could break. As always, TaniA managed to do something that seems impossible to others, providing us with a deeply emotional, universally healing, and wise piece of art. Her indomitable will and strength are poured into each and every sound she makes and each breath she takes. I am absolutely in awe of this amazing artist, and will stay right here, holding my breath to see what miracle she will bring to us next.
