Welcome to all my lovely readers and music fanatics. THE HOUSE FLIES are the subject of our review today. The House Flies, based in the Midwest, create a unique blend of gothic atmosphere, post-punk textures, and sombre Melodies. September fourth saw them bestow on us a masterclass in moods and movement in “Derelict Crawl,” their latest fiery piece of art, which not only needs to be listened to but felt too. “Derelict Crawl” is not your average song dropped in the virtual world; it is an entire ambiance, a nighttime confessional in the form of a beat that just once more proves why they have remained peerlessly unmatched in their work.
From the first line and intro of the song, one is dragged straight into that very intoxicating world of theirs that they construct so flawlessly, one where every single note, raging guitar, and drum beat is nothing but a personal secret shared with your very being. And the way it starts tells you that even at the end, they linger in one’s ears forever, reminding everyone that true genius does not need to scream in order to be heard. And then we will be convinced their disciples for life.
“Derelict Crawl,” a blazing new song that should be experienced rather than listened to. This isn’t another song to put on a playlist on your Spotify and forget about; it is a burning, roaring call to arms for everyone who is gloriously misfit and wonderfully unraveled. Right at the first note of this song, you are taken on a ride through that world which they create effortlessly, the world where every single note feels like a revelation whispered into your ear. It becomes an instant, bruised-knuckle battle cry for an army of misfits, a revolt against any plan forced upon people by the oppressive world around them and obsessed with conformity. Forget being the obedient son or daughter of your parents and an unanimated robot working nine to five and killing your soul for a living. This song is about breaking all the boxes, standing tall in your beautiful refusal to fit in, and shouting on the rooftops that you don’t belong there. And this song crawls under your skin and stays with you even after the last note fades, reminding you that genius doesn’t
Sonic-wise, “Derelict Crawl” hits with a brutal intensity, setting up a relentless post-punk groove that gets into your bones through the song’s hypnotic rhythms. In terms of production values, “Derelict Crawl” is a tour-de-force of sound building through intense waves of densely layered guitars, reminiscent of looming clouds of dark sounds that descend to silence in short, breathless breaks before rising back up again. At the very center of the song lies the hypnotizing phrase, “We don’t belong.” Here, we see the most raw, repetitive side of the record, showing the listener another thrilling direction on the track list, as well as pointing towards the looming atmospheres of the future. For everyone who finds themselves fascinated with the gothic atmospheres of post-punk, gothic rock, noise rock, and alternative guitar music in general, this track is essential listening. “Derelict Crawl” ranks among the best songs written by today’s masters such as Protomartyr and Interpol, carrying the DNA of its forefathers, Joy Division, with pride and respect.
Kudos to the group for creating an environment in which all of us feel like we fit in, effortlessly borrowing from the darkness of goth rock, the ethereal clouds of shoegaze, the beaten-down grittiness of grunge, and the soaring sounds of guitar music, all while maintaining that unmistakable Midwestern rawness at its heart. From start to finish, I loved every moment of it, and let me tell you, I was fully engaged in my fantasy of being yanked up onto that dark stage and playing alongside them. That is what makes a work of art truly great, and it’s the kind of thing that our world desperately needs and will never forget. And just wait until I get to rock with them again!
