The creation of such an expansive musical soundscape through the expression of pure, unadulterated emotion is sure to have a strong pull for anyone who hears it. Australian singer-songwriter Tia-Brittany creates just that with Don’t Talk Feelings (DTF), an outstanding 12-song album that was released on the 14th of August and proves that she is one of the most promising emerging artists in Australia. With its gripping focal point in “Don’t Talk Feelings,” the album merges the worlds of sophisticated pop music and soulful storytelling into an emotive guide to navigating the modern heart.
The title track, “DON’T TALK FEELINGS”, establishes the mood parameters of the album right from the start. The beginning of the song features a delicate and atmospheric wash of filtered stringed instruments, synthesizer keys that seamlessly flow into the sub-bass wobble sound, which is supported by crisp finger snaps. Speaking of lyrics, the song deals with the defense mechanism of keeping intimacy purely physical in order to save the wounded heart. The character in the song seems to have enjoyed the fact that she was casual lovers with this person, but soon things get complicated, and it is then that she realizes that she shouldn’t have been focused on just the physicality of the relationship. In fact, Tia Britany’s vocal performance on “DON’T TALK FEELINGS” is impeccable and shows great skill and control. From airy whispers in the verse section of the song, she moves to singing a catchy rhythm in the chorus against a polished background of trap-pop percussion sounds, deep bass hits, and guitar accents.
With “PERFECT”, there is a change in the vibe where there is a gentle thumping beat, a guitar riff that is muted and strummed solo before developing into a shimmering synth pad that is side-chained and a bass drop that has a rhythmic feel. The lyrical content starts to explore the stifling burden of the perfectionist approach in romance and how difficult it is to try and appear perfect in order to maintain the interest of the partner while hiding the flaws in oneself. The character tells us who this “perfect” person really is and, in doing so, opens our eyes to see who this person really is. On the musical side of things, it is the virtuosity of Tia’s vocals that comes to prominence, where she effortlessly jumps into falsetto lines.
The energy builds up in the song NOT “MY TYPE”, which opens with an aggressive and distorted bassline, a synth-pop melody accompanied by a hard-hitting kick drum and the tag of a dropped-down vocal melody. In terms of lyrical content, the track tells us a story about a character who decides to be honest and let a man pursuing her know that he’s not her type. It’s a brutal truth but a necessary evil. Instead of pretending, she lays all the cards on the table, discouraging this man who wants to be with her. Here, our persona has been treated badly, being with someone who only saw the worst in her and brought out the worst in her. It then turns out that this Mr High and Mighty was doing all this just to get into the pants of another woman, a vicious and deliberate way of making up things so he can abandon ship. The vocals by Tia are rough, breathy, and emotionally vulnerable, with a slight quiver when she reaches emotional notes amidst a minimalistic background of weeping cello, soft piano notes, and faint heartbeats of drums.
The pace gets going as “LONDON” begins with the sounds of rain, quickly changing to the tight, fast-paced UK garage two-step drum beat with an added sub-bass melody and the sound of Big Ben, a familiar landmark in the UK, being tolled. It’s no secret that London is the perfect way to let loose. In this song, the persona in the song gives her kind of hall pass, telling him to have his fun, but it’s sarcastic because no woman will be comfortable with her partner cheating, with this, so could he. The vocals in the song are effortlessly executed despite the fast and syncopated rhythm of the beats, which makes for a very intriguing contrast between upbeat production and melancholy vocals.
“Defiance” is the central theme of “BITE ME” as the song starts off with a highly assertive and buzzed electro-bass synth intro along with a sharp crack of the snare and a witty, high-pitched vocal chop. Lyrically, “Defiance” is an extremely snarky response to unwanted advice, exes with low self-worth, and critics who come across as patronizing. The vocals of Tia deliver the lyrics in a highly personal way, where she switches from whispers to taunting in verses and belting in the chorus, supported by hard synth stabs, powerful bass, and drums.
“DUDE” takes a more laid-back, soulful approach to the music selection, featuring a palm-muted electric guitar riff along with a laid-back humming from the vocalist and an R&B rim shot. This song talks about being fed up with people who have emotional immaturity regarding their relationships, which they treat as a sort of game. The vocals of Tia are quite impressive in terms of how relaxed and laid-back they are; she delivers her lines over a mid-tempo R&B groove with great ease, along with bass guitar and synth instrumentation.
“MODERN ROMANTIC” features slow and gradual synth arpeggios, inspired by the 80s, playing on top of the constant LinnDrum beats and reverb. The lyrical content is an insightful critique of dating in the internet era, touching upon swipe culture fatigue and, at the same time, maintaining a subtle but persistent hope for old-school real love. This song talks about a character who didn’t mean to hurt people but did anyway and tells her partner that she may be acting aloof about their relationship but, deep down, she actually loves him the way he loves her. Tia delivers the lyrics with an energetic bounce, along with the help of pop synth sounds, trap drums, and backup vocals.
Completing the collection, “ANOTHER LOVE SONG” starts with gentle fingerstyle picking on an acoustic guitar, followed by a wide-open orchestral arrangement and a soft kick drum beat. The lyrics convey the ultimate act of emotional submission, describing the fear and wonder of discovering that, no matter how many barricades and boundaries you have created. The persona talks to her partner, describing her relationship; in doing so, she highlights the negative side of their relationship and lets him know that she’s not being treated well in the relationship. Tia’s vocal delivery is nothing short of spectacular, shifting from whispers to an epic belt at the end in grand fashion, with orchestral support, acoustic instrumentation, and powerful drums.
