ARN- IDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECTS AND ALIEN FRIENDS’ SING- ALONG SONGS (ALBUM VERSION), A SOUND THAT REWRITES THE RULES

There are some returns that don’t quite come across as a new date to mark on the calendar, but rather as the lights turning back on inside one’s own living room. Hello again, Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends. If you’ve grown up listening to the work of the great Swedish auteur Arn, letting him transport you from your interior quiet space into his own cathedral via the narcotic fog of “Happy People Won’t Hear,” bleeding out through the floorboards while listening to “Your Love,” or losing yourself in the folktale amber haze of “Vagnar Av Guld,” The Sparrow, The Hag, and John In Roses’ Deep”, rest easy. They’ve done it again.

On May 15th, Arn released his latest song, “Sing-Along Songs (Album Version),” and labeling it a song is to undersell it entirely; it is an invitation to join the weather he has created for us and remember how it feels to be known by the art of another. Come inside. Let us lose ourselves in it.

And the transformation from that tempting instrumental prelude into the drop of the vocals is when a great song makes its way into the ultimate earworm. It creates a psychological compact for both the performer and the listener: the guitar gets you on the porch, but the vocals get you inside the house.

This isn’t just an invitation into the sound; this is the song lyric sheet being handed to you, the one you didn’t know was already memorized. This is the subtle magic of this particular tune; it isn’t what you think it is. As implied by the title, Arn isn’t trying to teach philosophy to you; they are merely reminding you of the way the universe operates when you aren’t pushing against it. Think of existence as a karaoke session: you don’t come up with the middle eight of the song; you don’t stress about whether you got the harmony right three bars ago; you just ride the chord progression to the next familiar landmark. It is the message of complete surrender masked as a hook: to stop hanging on desperately to the steering wheel of your sorrow or happiness and mouth the words where it feels nice. Only once the voice kicks in do you appreciate the brilliance of how not loud this map has been drawn.

What we’re being told here is an absolute masterclass of how to give a song its proper soul. As far as style is concerned, there is always this delicate balance between the pure rock-and-roll snarl of the punk and the sun-drenched hooks of power pop with just the tiniest hint of folk-rock lurking in the background. But this time it all comes together as the perfect manifestation of a long-held dream. This track feels more powerful, hitting harder as a result of the new punk vibe while also leaning into the sheer cheekiness of a fun power pop. The improvement in production is obvious right away, especially in the completely different opening section of the track and even more so in the second and third choruses that feature guest appearances by David Myhr, one of the power-pop kings of the past, who sings backing vocals that are simply unbelievably catchy. In every single track of this album, you’ll find a much-improved production value that is punchier, perfectly balanced, and clear.

The artist is, indeed, the quintessential definition of “the proof is in the pudding, with the only difference being that every dish he serves is better than the one before. From song to song, from album to album, the journey is an upward one as he lets the music do all the talking on its own accord. It’s such an absolute privilege to be part of such a fan club and see an artist who never fails to surpass himself. No matter where they take us in the future, you can bet I’m in it for the whole ride.
