The time has come to put down the everyday clothes and replace them with something much more classic, because we now have the great honor of introducing an organization that is rich in history and significance, a group known as LY@TT. Translating to “Late,” the group originates from the art hub of Charlottesville, Virginia, and embodies the brotherhood of musicianship in all its richness. The band, which comprises of Rick, Paul, D.C., and Ed, can trace their genesis to a remarkable event that took place in Lynchburg in 1988; an event that lends each and every melody played by them the sort of experienced and unmatchable chemistry. Following a great reunion in 2024, the group managed to find their refuge in Studio 607 located in Ivy, Virginia. Under the careful tutelage of their wise mentor and the visionary producer Tim Ryan, they have been engaged in the process of catching the magic in a bottle. Their latest opus was released on the 16th of June this year and is titled, “Song For Pete Ham.” It is a brilliant and soulful homage to the timeless legacy of music and the transformation undergone by the band itself. Let us delve into the depths of this impressive new single by LY@TT.
It emerges through an upbeat and very catchy, cheerful, and sunny melody that instantly makes you feel as though you have been transported into a completely different mood and place. Moreover, the melody has an additional element – a little mouth percussion that makes this composition even more interesting and unique. The melody is incredibly positive and uplifting, and it is impossible not to get involved in this process and be swept away by its magic flow. You are no longer listening to a simple song but getting engaged in the musical dialogue that draws you in. The intro of the song has managed to achieve the hardest goal a song may have – to grab you by the heartstrings and arouse interest and desire to listen to the entire piece of music.
In order to understand the significance of the emotion behind the “Song For Pete Ham”, it is important to realize first of all the imposing shadow and eternal light of the person it is dedicated to. Pete Ham was not only a musician but also the creator of music, being a songwriter from the band called Badfinger. The track is a pilgrimage to this great artist’s memory and an homage to this great legend of music who left this world prematurely on April 1975. In this highly charged duet, Paul R. Johnson and D.C. Williams wear the mantle of storyteller with great skill, balancing the fine line between tribute and the cold hard facts. LY@TT’s lyrics have never been afraid to embrace their vulnerability, and here they boldly dare to incorporate into their lyrics the very haunting presence of Pete’s last writing. In doing so, by incorporating Pete’s unflinching honesty in his last message, the brutal sting of the word “bastard”, the band has now earned their first explicit rating, but it is an artistically valid choice which is absolutely necessary and truthful. Not only is this song not meant to be comfortable, it is meant to be entirely truthful. And in that truth lies an artistic statement of Pete Ham’s full humanity, rather than trying to sanitize the tragic death.
Crafting the track “Song For Pete Ham” was an absolute triumph, a joint venture of talent and passion in order to pay homage to Ham, whose immense contribution to music is best captured by his unforgettable compositions such as “Without You,” “No Matter What,” “Baby Blue,” and “Day After Day.” Within the lyrics, the artist manages to sprinkle the tale with allusions to these timeless tracks, thereby making “Song For Pete Ham” an exciting search game for die-hard fans. From a purely musical perspective, this song is an amazing mixture of styles and eras. The backing vocals performed by Venezuelan guest singer Kleidi Buroz have a certain mystical feel to them, whereas the instrumentals are a respectful tribute to the distinct slide guitar style that was used by Badfinger. In particular, Rick Skinner performs an absolutely dazzling guitar solo in the “Middle 12” portion of the song along with impressive synthesizer work by Paul R. Johnson. Ed Booth makes up the very spine of the track. Booth is the drummer of the four-piece, and his work on drums and other percussion instruments has a power and energy about it that turns the whole track into an absolute boiling point. There is quite an interesting tale of pure musical talent in the making of the song, which goes like this: Ed Booth laid down the drum track in just one take and in perfection. The band instantly knew that this was absolutely perfect, and that trying to record a second track would only harm the magic already there in the first recording. All of this mixed together with Williams’ melodious bass guitar and clear acoustic guitars creates a true musical tapestry.
Since their reunion in 2024, the band has turned Studio 607 in Ivy, Virginia, into a sacred site of their rejuvenation, thanks in part to the guiding eye of their mentor and producer, Tim Ryan. One cannot help but feel the sense of purpose behind the new tracks; LY@TT has perfected the blend of poignant lyrics and melodious notes along with the hint of nostalgia that defines their music. Not only is “Song For Pete Ham” an awesome song, it is one which is incredibly touching and one that deserves to be preserved for all time to come. This is a tribute song which makes you feel like it was made in the artist’s honor, something that I’m sure Mr. Ham himself would appreciate immensely. It is simply amazing how a group can show such dedication towards preserving the legacy of the artists who helped create the music we listen to today and ensuring that the legacy of an actual icon does not die, but lives on for us and the future generations to come. The momentum is unstoppable. Here comes LY@TT!
